PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d’Alene outlasts Lakeland in five

RATHDRUM — For the second time in 17 days, Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland went back and fourth before the visiting Vikings won the last two sets to claim a 25-19, 16-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10 victory over the Hawks on Thursday night at Hawk Court. 

Senior Hannah Shafer had 25 assists and 18 digs for Coeur d’Alene (12-3), which won the first meeting in four sets at home. 

“Tonight was a hard-fought match,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We are really proud of how we stayed in it and found a way to come back.” 

Freshman Emily Hackett added 19 assists, 13 digs and two aces for the Vikings. Marly Sutich had 10 kills and two blocks, Eva Callari 10 kills, Embree McKeown 37 digs, Maren Larson three blocks. 

“Our freshmen really stepped up and brought some much-needed fire,” Curtis said. “Emily came up with a huge ace at a critical moment. Lola (Ruggiero) and Avery (Wilson) were swinging aggressively and staying confident at the net. We’ve been focusing on finishing and tonight was a step forward, to fight through tough moments to finish strong.” 

For Lakeland (5-5), senior Jolie Warren had 15 kills and 18 digs, Jaeli Hoffman 10 kills, 19 assists and four aces, Kindell Day 20 assists, Emma Beaty 22 digs, Anabel Bowie five blocks. 

“A great battle tonight,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “It was a scrappy, hard-fought match on both sides, and unfortunately, we couldn’t find the momentum we needed at the end to finish it out. Emma had a great defensive game, making big plays and keeping us in rallies. Jaeli brought some serious energy with aggressive swings that gave us a spark when we needed it most. Jolie continued to make an impact on both sides of the ball, playing strong offensively and defensively. Kindell and Jaeli did a great job running our offense and keeping Coeur d’Alene guessing. We have some areas to clean up, but I’m proud of the fight and competitiveness this team showed tonight. We’ll learn from it, get back to work, and keep pushing forward.” 

Next up for both teams is the Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament on Saturday in Rockford, Wash.

Moscow 

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Ella Jeanselme had 11 kills, nine digs and eight aces as the host Timberwolves swept the Bears 25-11, 25-10, 25-18.  

Camryn Woodman added 11 kills, four digs and two aces, and Kate Moglia had 24 assists and four digs for Lake City (5-1). 

“We had a great chance to work on some adjustments and I’m excited about how things looked,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Another fun night with such a special group.” 

Moscow is 0-4. 

Next up for Lake City is the Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament on Saturday in Rockford, Wash.

Post Falls 

POST FALLS — The Trojans suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the visiting Bullpups 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17 at The Arena. 

Teresa Smith had 14 kills and Peyton Barclift added 12 kills, four blocks and 10 digs for Post Falls (5-1). Lucy Carr had 21 assists, 11 digs and three aces, Lucy Smith 15 assists, Annabelle Tucker two blocks. 

“Playing a competitive team like Gonzaga Prep shows us exactly where we are and where we can go,” first-year Post Falls coach Casey Cornett said. “It’s always tough to take a four-set loss, but the energy and resilience the girls brought was great to see. We look forward to getting back to work in practice, cleaning up a few areas, and continuing to build our game.” 

Post Falls plays host to Moscow on Saturday.

Coeur du Christ 

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Addie Archer totaled 11 kills, 11 digs and two aces as the host 4A Tigers handed the 1A Saints their first loss, 25-9, 25-14, 25-19. 

Willow Mattson had 18 assists, seven digs and an ace for Timberlake (5-6), Jordyn Parke added 10 assists, eight digs and two aces, Shae Jones six kills and two blocks, Sidnie Thompson 10 digs and three aces.  

“Coeur du Christ did a good job of continuing to swing and play scrappy to the end,” Timberlake coach Lisa Gardom said. “We had to be on our toes and we played good defense. We were able to run a quicker offense tonight and we got some really good looks for our middles. When things didn’t go our way, the girls were able to reset quickly and get back in the game. Our setters did a great job of moving the ball around and gave lots of opportunities to our hitters.” 

For Coeur du Christ (5-1), Espi Klocko had 12 digs, Therese Junkin six assists, Abigail Ross two aces, Abby Fanning three digs. 

On Tuesday, Coeur du Christ plays host to Lakeside, and Timberlake is home against Sandpoint.

PLUMMER — The Knights (1-3) fell to the Wampus Cats (7-0) 25-13, 25-23, 25-10 in a nonleague match at Ron Miller Court.

WALLACE — The Miners defeated the Warriors 25-22, 25-19, 25-9 in a nonleague match at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Kootenai (3-4) travels to Valor Christian of Sandpoint on Tuesday. 

Wallace (2-5) travels to Lakeside for a Scenic Idaho Conference match on Monday.

RATHDRUM — Junior midfielder Cole Zlateff recorded a hat trick for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Badgers at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“It’s been nice to have Cole this year,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “He puts a lot of pressure on the other defenses and helps to get other guys involved. Our defense is starting to come together. As a coach, you’re never satisfied and always working on things. Bonners played hard and it was a good back-and-forth game. I’m glad we’re scoring, but we’ve got some things we need to work on.” 

Senior Luke Fritts and junior Noah Pack also scored for Lakeland (4-2), which travels to Coeur d’Alene on Saturday. 

Junior Josh Warner and sophomore Miles Oxford scored for Bonners Ferry (3-2-1), which travels to Timberlake on Saturday.
