PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City blanks Eisenhower for third straight victory

YAKIMA, Wash. — Senior Braden Van Leuven ran for a pair of second-half touchdowns — giving him eight in the last three games — and the Lake City Timberwolves shut out the Eisenhower Cadets for the third straight season, this time 14-0 on Friday night at Zaepfel Stadium. 

Lake City’s defense preserved the shutout by forcing a fumble, and also getting an interception from senior Karter Engebretsen. Junior defensive lineman Liam McWilliams had “multiple” sacks, Timberwolves coach Byron Hout said. 

“Eisenhower’s defense did a good job holding us scoreless in the first half,” Hout said. “Our defense came out with an interception in the second half, and then the offense picked it up from there.” 

Lake City (3-1) won its third straight game. 

Eisenhower is 0-2. 

Lake City plays Highland of Pocatello next Friday at Montana Tech University in Butte.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The visiting Hawks got the offense untracked after trailing 34-0 at halftime, but fell to the Blue Devils (1-1).

“We didn’t show up in the first half with three turnovers and a blocked field goal for a touchdown,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “It was probably the worst half of football I’ve seen at Lakeland. But our guys did a great job of getting back into the game.” 

Lakeland trailed 37-28 with under five minutes remaining before the Blue Devils scored again. 

Lakeland was without starting tailback Griffin Tamagni, who injured his ankle in the second half against Weiser on Sept. 4.

“We’ve had a few injuries and are starting to get stretched out a little bit,” Schroeder said. “But I’m proud of how the kids responded in the second half and showed their character.” 

Lakeland (0-4) hosts Post Falls next Friday.

DEARY — Jon Denke returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and the visiting Saints improved to 3-0 on the season with a win over the Mustangs at Deary High.

Denke also rushed for two touchdowns for Coeur du Christ. 

Grant Clemens threw four touchdown passes, two to Eli Zember, and one each to Anders Sundholm and Beckett Beyer.

Liam Anderson also ran for a score for the Saints.

“The game was actually closer than the score indicates; we never really felt like we had total control,” Coeur du Christ coach Kellen Clemens said. “Deary is a lot better than their record.”

Beckett Beyer had a fumble recovery and an interception for Coeur du Christ.

Coeur du Christ travels to Salmon River on Sept. 26.
