NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men notch one more for the road

RENO, Nev. — After weeks on the road, the 17th-ranked North Idaho College men’s soccer team returns home on Thursday.
Close enough, that is.
Sebastiano Casini, a sophomore from Bologna, Italy scored on an assist in the seventh minute for the Cardinals, who beat Truckee Valley Community College 3-0 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match on Saturday.
Rabi Helmand, a freshman from Frankfurt, Germany, scored in the 44th minute for NIC (6-0-1, 3-0 SWAC), which entered the NJCAA poll this week.
“We wanted players running forward and Sebastiano made a good run toward the goal early on,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “We struggled a bit taking shots and kind of hesitated when they were there. But we had a lot of ball possession and stayed on top of them. Defensively, we wanted to squeeze on them and recover the ball high, and it gave us a lot of chances.”
NIC hosts 14th-ranked Snow College of Ephraim, Utah, on Thursday at the Marimn Health Coeur Center in Worley, one of three upcoming matches to be played in Worley to cut down on wear and tear at Eisenwinter Field in Coeur d’Alene.
“We’ve been down there to practice and are quite familiar with that field,” Williams said. “We practice daily on The Fields in Post Falls, so we’re used to playing on the turf.”
Truckee Meadows is 2-4, 1-2.

Cardinals finish
Colorado tourney unbeaten
LA JUENTA, Colo. — North Idaho College improved to 13-4 on the season with wins over Gillette and Central Wyoming in the Otero tournament.
Against Gillette, NIC won 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-20. The Cardinals, who swept Central Wyoming on Friday, defeated the Rustlers of Riverton, Wyo., 25-20, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21 on Saturday.
“Today was a good test for us,” NIC coach Drew Pascua said. “Having to play Central Wyoming on back-to-back days and having to work through their new game plan, since that’s what we will have to do in conference play. A couple players that have carried the passing and attacking load for us got a bit winded, so it was nice to see our depth chart step up and make plays.”
Freshman Brynlie Cornia had 20 kills, Camryn Farrar, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High had 17 kills and 16 digs and freshman Taylin Everingham, also from Coeur d’Alene, had 16 digs for NIC, which hosts Spokane Colleges on Tuesday.
