PREP VOLLEYBALL: Coeur d'Alene wins at Freeman; Lakeland third, Lake City fifth

ROCKFORD, Wash. — The Coeur d’Alene Vikings went 5-0 to capture the championship at the Freeman Rip-A-Shot tournament Saturday at Freeman High. 

The 6A Inland Empire League Vikings beat the 5A IEL Lewiston Bengals 25-20, 25-20 in the championship match of the 16-team tournament. 

“I’m incredibly proud of this team for earning the tournament championship,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We faced some tough opponents, but continued to compete and showed tremendous grit.”

Lakeland went 4-1 and finished third. 

Lake City went 4-1 and finished fifth. 

Coeur d’Alene (17-3) in pool play, beat Riverside 25-4, 25-7, Ritzville 25-14, 25-15 and Mead 21-25, 26-24, 15-13 to win its pool. 

In the top bracket, Coeur d’Alene beat host Freeman 27-25, 25-21, then beat Lewiston. 

Junior Marly Sutich had 22 kills on the day for Coeur d’Alene. Hannah Shafer had 56 assists and 31 digs, Maren Larson 21 kills and eight blocks, Emily Hackett 36 assists, Eva Callari 43 digs and eight aces, Embree McKeown 45 digs, Lola Ruggiero 16 kills, Jovie Le six blocks, Julianna Hasso six aces, Brielle Basson four blocks. 

“It was a complete team effort, and every player contributed to our success,” Curtis said. “Our setters did an amazing job moving the ball around, and we served aggressively to keep our opponents out of system. Eva and Embree were fluid and relentless on defense all day.” 

Lakeland, in pool play, beat East Valley 25-8, 25-7, Pullman 25-21, 25-15 and Chelan 25-17, 25-16 to win its pool. 

In bracket play, Lakeland lost in the semifinals to Lewiston 20-25, 25-23, 20-18, then beat Freeman 26-24, 25-21 for third place. 

Against East Valley, Marissa Benson had four kills and five aces for Lakeland (9-6), Jaeli Hoffman six assists, Kindell Day five assists, Anabel Bowie three blocks, Maddi Justesen five digs. 

Against Pullman, Day had 13 assists, Hoffman 12, Jolie Warren 11 kills and nine digs, Justesen three blocks, Bowie four aces, Shasta Ackerman 10 digs. 

Against Chelan, Bowie had five kills and three aces, Ackerman 11 digs, Warren seven kills, Day and Hoffman eight assists each, Ella Cook three blocks. 

Against Lewiston, Justesen had 11 kills, Warren seven kills and two blocks, Day 18 assists and four aces, Hoffman 11 assists, Ackerman 15 digs. 

Against Freeman, Warren had seven kills and six digs, Bowie five kills and three blocks, Hoffman five kills and nine assists, Day nine assists, Justesen four aces, Ackerman seven digs. 

“We had a great tournament today,” said Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger, a 2014 Freeman High grad. “I’m incredibly proud of Shasta for stepping up in a big way with Emma (Beaty) out sick for this tournament. She embraced the opportunity and helped our team when we needed it most. The energy we had during pool play was so much fun to watch. The way these girls encourage, support, and compete for one another continues to show just how phenomenal the culture of this team is. I thought all of our girls played well and fought hard, especially after a long day of volleyball. I’m proud of the way they battled, supported each other, and continued to compete until the very end.” 

Lake City, in pool play, beat Moses Lake 25-15, 20-25, 15-4, swept Newport 25-9, 25-9 and lost to Lewiston 25-21, 25-27, 16-14. 

That put Lake City in the second tier bracket, for places 5-8. 

The Timberwolves beat Pullman 27-25, 27-25 and 

Lewis and Clark 25-15, 25-17 to finish fifth. 

Camryn Woodman had 40 kills, eight aces and 34 digs on the day for Lake City (9-2). Ella Jeanselme added 28 kills, 11 aces and 36 digs, Kate Moglia 65 assists, seven kills, 33 digs, six blocks and three aces, and Sonia Rei-Fong 67 digs and four aces 

“Overall a good day with enduring through some tight games,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “We stayed aggressive and cohesive in key moments. An unlucky break against Lewiston, but I’m proud of how we bounced back and finished the afternoon with back-to-back wins. A strong showing from the North Idaho IEL teams, which just goes to show how tough our league is.” 

As the schedule would have it, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston on Tuesday. 

Lakeland plays host to Moscow on Tuesday. 

Lake City plays at Post Falls on Tuesday in 6A IEL play.

POST FALLS — The host Trojans bounced back from their first loss with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-9 victory over the Bears at The Arena. 

Freshman Peyton Barclift had 17 kills for Post Falls (6-1). Annabelle Tucker added nine kills and two blocks, Lucy Smith 22 assists and five digs, Malia Uemoto 11 assists and three aces, Rylie Gump two blocks, Teresa Smith nine digs and four aces, Danica Pratt four aces. 

“Credit to Moscow for continuing to battle through a tough match,” Post Falls coach Casey Cornett said. “Our emphasis tonight was about playing with intent on our side of the net. While we got the chance to explore some new lineups and expand connections on the court, our focus was trying to executing the details — sharpening our blocking, locking down our defensive technique, and doing everything with a clear purpose. It was a great opportunity to reinforce those standards as we keep working to get better.” 

Moscow is 0-5. 

Post Falls plays host to Lake City on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — The host Wildcats swept the Bulldogs 25-8, 25-17, 25-7 in Central Idaho League play at Andrews Gymnasium.

No other information was available.

Kellogg (6-0, 4-0 CIL) plays host to Priest River on Thursday.

Grangeville is 0-6, 0-2.
