Heat pumps offer great efficiency, but what happens when the weather turns severe?

You can keep heat pumps efficient during severe weather by keeping the outdoor unit clear of snow and ice and protecting the system from extreme wind and debris. You should also avoid constant thermostat adjustments during cold spells and schedule maintenance before severe weather arrives.

According to RMI, in 2024, electricity was the heating fuel of choice for 42% of American households. Many people have converted to using electric heat pumps, as they're better for the environment.

They're not immune to severe weather, though. These are the ways you can keep your heat pumps running, even when there are bad conditions outside.

Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear of Snow and Ice

When there's freezing weather, HVAC units can work harder. This is because heavy snow and ice can restrict airflow around them.

You should regularly check the area around the unit and remove accumulations of debris. There should also be several feet of clearance around it so that air can move freely through the coil.

Do note that this equipment automatically has a heat pump defrost cycle when frost builds up, so seeing visible steam or water during operation is normal. If there's unusually heavy ice accumulation, though, there may be an airflow or equipment problem.

How Can You Protect the System From Extreme Wind and Debris?

When there's severe wind, debris may be carried over and stuck on your outdoor unit. As a result, there may be heating equipment strain, as the materials can block airflow or even damage the components.

This is why, before an expected storm, you should inspect the area around the unit and secure loose outdoor objects. Don't cover the heat pump while it's operating, though.

After storms, check for fallen branches or visible damage. Clear away the debris if it's safe to do so.

Avoid Constant Thermostat Adjustments During Cold Spells

A severe cold snap can make it tempting to keep adjusting the thermostat so you can get good winter home comfort. This can cause the system to work harder, though, and it can actually reduce your comfort in the long run.

Heat pumps often run longer than conventional furnaces do since they deliver heat more gradually, so it's normal for them to continuously operate during very cold weather. A stable thermostat setting lets your heat pump operate predictably, and this can prevent unexpectedly high energy bills.

Should You Schedule Maintenance Before Severe Weather Arrives?

Effective cold climate heating means scheduling regular maintenance, especially before severe weather arrives. When you have a professional inspect your unit, they can find problems and provide heat pump repair services.

If you keep your equipment in good condition, it'll transfer heat more efficiently and reduce the likelihood of an unexpected breakdown. Finding and fixing issues while they're small will ultimately cost you less, too.

Stay Safe and Comfortable, Even in Severe Weather

When there's severe weather, you'll want your heat pump to be in working order. By scheduling routine maintenance, making preparations beforehand, and inspecting your property afterward, you can ensure that your equipment runs for as long as possible without replacement.
