Law roundup: Closing time for day drinkers in Whitefish

A pair of men enjoying afternoon beers in a building got cut off after a passerby tipped off the Whitefish Police Department. The passerby described the duo as in their 60s and looking disheveled. They told the police they were concerned about the day drinking as there were children in the area. Along with enforcing closing time, the officers cited both men for open containers.  

A city employee asked the police to clear off a person sleeping in a gazebo.  

Officers cited a motorist for driving with expired registration. A second motorist got a warning for a broken brake light. 

The manager of a store called the police looking for help in dealing with what appeared to be First Amendment auditors. Members of that movement typically seek to test free speech protections by filming or photographing in public spaces, though critics argue that its adherents' tactics devolve into harassment and intimidation. The manager told officers that the auditors were calling the number at the store so frequently that they had to disconnect it. 

Leaving a liquor store, a customer learned that their vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run by a passerby. 

Officers cited a motorist for careless driving near West Second Street.
