The Superior Bobcat football team is not quite perfect, but very close to it so far this season.

Coach Jeff Shultz’s Bobcats improved to 3-0 with another impressive win Friday, sweeping past the Clearwater Valley Rams 58-0 in Kooskia, Idaho. Up next for the Bobcats are the Clark Fork Wampus Cats in Superior Friday.

To say that the Bobcats have been impressive on the gridiron so far would be a gross understatement, they have in fact been almost perfect.

A prime example of that near-perfection is Superior quarterback Landon Richards, who entered the Clearwater Valley game a perfect 14 for 14 passing so far this season.

Although his perfect passing record was broken in Idaho, Richards did complete 11 of 17 throws for 247 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to running the ball seven times for another 158 yards and two more TDs.

On the receiving end of nine of those passes for 194 yards and two more touchdowns, Gannon Quinlan added another six-pointer on a running play.

Two-way terror Turner Milender turned in 16 tackles and a sack on defense and played what Schultz called “an integral role” in two goal line stands by the Superior defense, besides rushing the ball 10 times for 38 yards and a touchdown on offense.

Tyler Mellen was another defensive force for the Bobcats, forcing a fumble and recovering it for a touchdown, and Jack Kemp registered two quarterback sacks.

Schultz was impressed with Clearwater Valley and expects another good game from an Idaho opponent in Clark Fork this week.

“I think they were the best team we have faced so far this season,” Schultz said of the Rams. “We had an advantage up front but their skill guys were pretty athletic, stacked up our running game and forced us into doing some different things. And Clark Fork looks similar to Clearwater Valley, another good team with some good athletes.”

One of the players who gives Superior that up front advantage on the line of scrimmage, sophomore Amarie Johnson, listed at 6-2 and 285 pounds, caught a pass from his offensive guard position and rambled over 20 yards before finally being stopped (reportedly painfully so) in Kooskia, Schultz said.

The Western C 8-Man football race took an interesting turn last week when St. Regis upset No. 6 ranked Seeley-Swan Friday (see other story). With five apparent strong contenders fighting for four playoff spots, Superior, St. Regis and Darby are all 3-0 while Mission and Seeley-Swan are 2-1.

The Bobcats have impressively outscored their opponents 202-18 in the three games played so far this season, and have now posted two shutout wins.
