KVSA Memorial Youth Pheasant Hunt set for Oct. 9

The Kootenai Valley Sportsman Association is hosting its third annual KVSA Memorial Youth Pheasant Hunt Friday, Oct. 9, at the Boundary-Smith Creek Wildlife Management Area. 

The hunt, held in partnership with the First Hunt Foundation and Idaho Department of Fish and Game, is open to youth ages 12 to 17. Participants will hunt alongside experienced dog handlers and mentors while learning more about pheasant hunting. 

There is no cost to participate, and shotguns and ammunition will be provided. Hunters must have a valid Idaho junior hunting license or hunting passport. Upland game bird permits are not required for hunters under 18. 

In preparation for the hunt, a gun safety and familiarity orientation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Kootenai Valley Gun Range, 67175 U.S. Highway 2 in Bonners Ferry. 

The orientation is mandatory for participants who are unfamiliar with firearms and is strongly encouraged for all hunters. Following safety instruction, participants will have an opportunity to practice shooting clay targets. Shotguns and ammunition will be provided. Duke’s Claybusters will provide clay targets and additional coaching.

The Kootenai Valley Sportsman Association was also selected to receive an Idaho Fish and Game Commission Challenge Grant to help support this year’s hunt. 

KVSA is a nonprofit organization that works to enhance and conserve hunting and fishing opportunities in Boundary County, promote positive relationships between landowners and sportsmen, support wildlife education and awareness, and cooperate with state and federal wildlife agencies.
