On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Sandpoint Trailblazers cross-country mountain bike team competed with over 300 other riders at the Herron Hustle in Kalispell, Mont.

The racers experienced a fast course, with mostly double track to the top of the climb. Seven of the nineteen team members who participated achieved a podium finish. Madison Van Stone, a JV3 racer, finished first for the third time of the season.

“What helped me achieve getting first [place] was getting my strategy and getting ahead in the start so I could recover on the downhill,” Van Stone said. “My greatest inspiration is watching the older racers and how they never give up.”

Maximus Altemus, a teammate of Van Stone, finished fourth.

“I tried to stay in the top five and on the last uphill I tried to pass as much as I could,” Altemus said after being asked about his strategy for the race. “Concentrating and taking deep breaths before the race, and training hard earlier in the season helped me prepare.”

The Sandpoint Trailblazers had an amazing race overall, with two team members racing for the first time. Further updates to follow as the Trailblazers take on their next race, the Copper Kings Clash in Butte, Montana on September 26.
