MISSOULA — Rebound goals and double duty paved the way for Glacier’s soccer sweep Saturday, with the Wolfpack points picking up a landmark victory over the Missoula Hellgate Knights.

Sophomores Liam Swank and Kaden Grant scored as the boys rallied for a 2-1 win, unofficially the first for the program at Rattlesnake Fields since 2008. 

Then the girls prevailed 1-0 when Lucy Holloway, like Grant before her, followed up her shot on goal with a put-back late in the second half.  

It was the second straight road win over Hellgate for the girls; for the boys, it was the fourth ever.

Hellgate led 1-0 but couldn’t deny the Pack (6-1-0), which got the equalizer from Swank, who put in a deflection from a few yards inside the box. 

“I think it was a shot off of Brecken (Evenson), and I got the rebound, got the finish,” Swank said of fourth goal of the season. “We just knew coming in we needed to win this game and put it to them.  

“Yesterday we were talking about what our strategy was going to be and how we were going to win. Today we put it into work.” 

Grant’s goal was his first this season. 

“It was a set piece from (Madrid) Stephan, right on top of the box,” he said. “The keeper had a good save and I just came in right on the back post and finished it, one touch.” 

It was the first loss for Hellgate (5-1-0) in more ways than one. 

“It’s actually the first time we’ve been able to beat them on their home ground,” Grant said. “Our coaches have been telling us how good it will feel to make history here. It was great.” 

The website Wallsoccer.net has Glacier winning 3-2 at the Rattlesnake Fields in 2008, when Ryan O’Rourke coached the Pack. Either way, it’s a landmark victory for the program and coach Ryan Billiet, who took over in 2014. And maybe it’s not a huge surprise to a young, talented squad. 

“I think we expect a lot of ourselves and our program,” Swank said.

Holloway’s goal off her own deflected shot in the 63rd minute was the difference 

“It was just a great buildup from the back, from all our team,” the junior said after team improved to 4-1-1. “All these great connecting passes and just the opportunity came.” 

“The keeper just hit it off her back foot, and I just toe-poked it in.” 

Hellgate turned up the pressure as the game wound down. Helping the Wolfpack hold on was Holloway, whom coach Ryan Thompson switched into a defensive role. 

“Last year she was an all-conference center-back,” Thompson said. “We moved her up to the wing this year; she’s brilliant on the wing. And in moments were it’s 1-0, when we’re holding onto a lead, we might move her back because she’s super good back there.  

“I always feel bad pulling off a goal scorer, but I said, ‘Hey, you’re playing center-back the rest of the game,’ and she’s just like: ‘Absolutely, will do.’ “ 

The Knights fell to 4-2-0, but only after a great crossing shot in the final minutes went just wide.  

“Cutting it close, man,” Thompson said. “But I’m so proud of their effort. The top five teams in the Western Conference are so close to each other. The effort that it just takes to win. ... We definitely hung on a little bit at the end, but that’s what you’ve got to do.” 

“We knew coming into the game it was going to be a challenge,” Holloway said. “And I’m just awfully proud of our team.”
