Jodie Lynn Ryan Fredrickson Coston, 53

Jodie Lynn Ryan Fredrickson Coston, 53, of Kalispell, passed away peacefully on Sept. 10, 2026.

Jodie was born in Havre on July 15, 1973, to Bill and Elaine Ryan. She was adopted one week later by Allan and Sandy Fredrickson and raised in Kalispell. She attended Peterson Elementary School and even had her dad as her fourth-grade teacher. She graduated from Flathead High School with honors in 1991. Growing up, she loved her ballet classes and her first job at the local movie theaters. She was also involved in many school activities and clubs.

In March 2001, Jodie married Mike Coston. They met and fell in love through their mutual interest in competitive USPSA matches, in which they both won many competitions and bragging rights. They also enjoyed camping, rock hounding and geocaching. Jodie and Mike recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and could easily be mistaken for newlyweds.

Jodie graduated from the New York Institute of Photography and started her own Coston Stock Photography. Her award-winning photographs have been published and displayed around the Flathead Valley and beyond, even gracing a local phone book cover and Glacier Park brochures.

Photography was not her only love. Jodie was an active member of The Humane Society of Northwest Montana. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was holding a perfect record for adopting into her family each and every dog she and Mike fostered throughout the years. Her devotion to her rescue dogs was awesome and carried over into a job at Petco as a dog groomer.

It was hard to know if Jodie loved to learn or travel more. She was able to combine two of her passions by completing an astronomy course at Flathead Valley Community College, then travelling to observe three eclipses in Idaho, Texas and Utah. She was able to cross destinations off her bucket list by recently travelling to St. Thomas, Seattle and Las Vegas. As a child, she had treasured memories of travelling to Sydney, Montana and North Dakota to visit extended family during summer vacations.

When she wasn't globe-trotting, Jodie could be found with the yarn-loving ladies of her knitting club, the literary enthusiasts of her book club, or going head-to-head with other brainiacs at local Trivia Nights across the valley.

In 2015, Jodie was reunited with her birth family through 23 and Me. She reconnected with her birth parents and was overjoyed to find out she had three beautiful sisters. Determined to make up for lost time, one week you may have found Jodie in Lolo visiting her art aficionado sister, Jen Ryan Hickes, for a birthday celebration. A short time later, she would have made it to Missoula to join her Non-Profit Maven sister, Kelli Hess, for a sporting event. Then crisscrossing the state to Billings to join her volleyball megastar sister, Katie Howells, for a holiday meal. Nothing was more important, or interfered, with "sister time."

Jodie will be remembered for her lasting connections and devotion to family and friends, her courage when faced with hard life challenges and illness, her beautiful smile, and love of education, animals and 80's music.

Jodie is preceded in death by her adoring parents, Allan and Sandy Fredrickson.

Jodie is survived by her husband Mike Coston and their precious dog, Jasper; Her sister Jen Ryan Hickes, her husband Hunter and their children Violet and Duncan; Her sister Kelli Hess, her husband Erik and their children Henry, Delta and Rudy; Her sister Katie Howells, her husband Craig and their children Ryan and Ben; Her birth parents Bill and Elaine Ryan and many other cherished family members and close friends.

Jodie's family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to her entire medical team at Logan Health for their unwavering care and compassion.

In accordance with Jodie's wishes, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 10 at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home after cremation.

It was Jodie's wish that any memorial tributes be made to the Humane Society of Northwest Montana.
