Rocky Mountain holds off Western's late push

DILLON — Ty Battle blasted off for 173 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries as Rocky Mountain held off Montana Western 38-32 on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium. 


Rocky (2-1) quarterback Jhett Schwahn threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Jae’Sean Pete added 95 rushing yards and scored twice. 


Kaden LaPlaunt led Western (1-2), throwing for 436 yards and four touchdowns. Seth Shook caught three touchdown passes and finished with 101 receiving yards. 


The Bulldogs outgained Rocky 555-497 but converted just 2 of 12 third downs and committed 10 penalties. 


Rocky entered halftime ahead 21-12 after Schwahn found Bergen Mysse for a 17-yard touchdown. The Bears stretched its lead to 31-12 on Jordan Legg’s 29-yard field goal and Battle’s 85-yard touchdown run. LaPlaunt threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns to bring Western back, but Battle answered with a 57-yard score with 4:17 remaining. 


Whitefish products Carson Gulick and Bodie Smith contributed defensively for Western. Gulick had a tackle for loss, while Smith recovered a fumble and assisted on two tackles. 


Montana Tech 58, Southern Oregon 10


BUTTE — Polson standout Jarrett Wilson completed 18 of 20 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns as Tech rolled past Southern Oregon. 


The Orediggers (4-0) piled up 604 yards and scored on seven straight possessions, building a 41-10 lead by halftime. 


Jamal Cariglia rushed for 67 yards and three touchdowns, and Levi Torgerson caught 11 passes for 146 yards and two scores. 


Thompson Falls’ Max Hannum added a 16-yard interception return. Flathead product Anders Thompson rushed for 40 yards for the Orediggers; Glacier’s Luke Bilau caught a 12-yard pass and Asher Knopik recorded two tackles, including one for loss. 


Carroll 42, Dickinson State 7


HELENA — Gage Norslien blocked a punt for the opening touchdown, and Max Grady added a 30-yard pick-six in the second quarter as the Saints exploded to a 42-0 lead by halftime. 


The Saints (2-1) finished with 352 yards. Kaden Hout threw for 179 yards, while Peter Minnaert led the ground game with 52. Norslien paced the defense with 10 tackles. 


Dickinson State (1-3) was limited to 240 yards and suffered three turnovers. The Blue Hawks avoided the shutout on Hudsen Grovom's 17-yard run in the final quarter. 


College of Idaho 59, MSU-Northern 14


HAVRE — Malakhi Statler threw for 169 yards and a touchdown in Northern's loss on Saturday. 


Isaiah Woodley caught 10 passes for 71 yards, while Statler connected with Bryan Yobo for a 19-yard touchdown. Sadik Sadik added an explosive moment for the Lights (0-4), breaking free for a 75-yard score. 


Northern pulled within 35-14 during the second quarter, but College of Idaho answered before halftime and scored the final 24 points. The Yotes finished with 624 yards of offense. 


Glacier product Easton Kauffman recorded a tackle and returned two kickoffs for 20 yards for the Lights. Polson’s Tommy Sherry added a tackle. 



Mayville St. 42, Simpson 41


MAYVILLE, N.D. — The host Comets scored 16 unanswered points in the final four minutes, taking the lead for the first time with a two-point PAT with one second on the clock to defeat Simpson.  


Ya’J Vance had a huge game at quarterback for Simpson, which is coached by former Eureka coach Trevor Utter: He threw for 228 yards and two scores and ran for 114 yards and five touchdowns.  


Vance’s 16-yard strike to D’Ante Benjamin put Simpson up 41-26 with 6:26 left. The Comets drove 75 yards to close the gap to 41-34 with 3:22 left, then recovered the onside kick. That set the state for a 2-yard TD pass to Cameron Spaeth and Isaiah Smith’s successful PAT run.  


Eureka product Caleb Utter recorded 10 tackles for the Red Hawks, while Libby's Jace DeShazer added three.
