Lyal Zaugg, 94

Lyal was born April 6, 1932, in Union, Ore. He was the third of six children born to August and Delta (Stringham) Zaugg. 

He grew up on a wheat farm and had many stories of plowing, planting, irrigating, and harvesting. Their family also ran a dairy, so he also had stories centered around cows and milking. He would say that the main sources of frustration start with the letter C: cars, computers, and cows! He also enjoyed hunting deer and elk with his father, brothers, and family for the family table. He enjoyed lots of activities in high school, including yearbook and sports. His senior football team took state in their division. 

At 19, he served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Eastern States Mission, serving in the Appalachian area of the country. When he returned home, he met his eternal sweetheart, Joyce Standley, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple for time and eternity. He got his Civil Engineering degree from Oregon State University and began a long and fulfilling career working for the U.S. Forest Service. He worked in Willamette National Forest, Mt. Hood National Forest, the Regional Offices in Portland, Ore., and Idaho Panhandle National Forest. He spent the last 49 years (over half of his life) in Hayden, Idaho, and loved the beauty and community there. Lyal loved his career and would often remind himself how fortunate he was to get paid to be out in the mountains and forests. 

Many weekend family activities and vacations were spent hiking and camping. Lyal also earned a surveyor's license, and he and Joyce worked together to earn extra income. They did most things together: decorating wedding cakes, making and hanging draperies, hanging wallpaper, crafting, and quilting. They were a formidable team. Lyal was at home in his backyard garden and was happy to share produce and flowers. He was ready with a joke or a fun story and loved to recount his many experiences. Lyal spent his life in the service of His Savior, Jesus Christ, holding many positions of leadership in his Church. He and Joyce served two 2-year missions to the Island of St. Vincent and to Boston, Mass., to supervise the building of the temple there. They also served for many years in the Seattle and the Spokane temples. He was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America, holding Council leadership positions, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his contributions to scouting.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents, August and Delta; his brothers, Stuart (Jo) and Waldo (Phyllis); his sister, Rosemary; his in-laws, Boyd and June Standley; his brother-in-law, Glenn Standley; and his sister-in-law, Michelle Zaugg. He is survived by his brothers, Rollin (Sheri) Zaugg of Sandy, Ore.; and Noel Zaugg of Springville, Utah; his brother-in-law, JD Williams of Boise, Idaho; his sister-in-law, Carol Standley of Boise, Idaho; and his children, Valerie (Randy) Newquist of Port Orchard, Wash.; Brenda (Norm) Sorensen of St. George, Utah; Jeffrey (Shauna) Zaugg of Hayden and foster son Kendall Old Horn of Crow Agency, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Honeysuckle Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 477 E. Honeysuckle Ave., Hayden, Idaho. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m., all at the church. Interment will be at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens.
