Camp cabins, RV site to be considered by land use advisory committee

The Bigfork Land Use Advisory Council is set to review two conditional use permit applications at its Thursday, Sept. 24 meeting.
Big Sky Bible Camp is requesting modifications to a permit initially issued 15 years ago for a camp and retreat center located on its Echo Lake property. The land is zoned for agricultural use, but the previous permit was approved by the Flathead County Board of Adjustment.
The camp originally planned to build four fourplex cabins and a cafeteria but has since determined that eight duplex cabins are better suited to the geography of the property, according to the permit application. Changing the number of cabins will not impact water, sewer or electrical needs from the previous application.
The cafeteria has already been constructed.
Big Sky Bible Camp is a nondenominational Bible camp and conference center that owns 200 acres on Echo Lake. Founded in 1947, the camp operates year-round and runs summer and winter camps, wilderness programs and Camp Promise, the only overnight camp experience in Montana for children and adults with special needs.
Ralph Hahn has requested a conditional use permit for a recreational vehicle park on property located on Abbott Lake that is currently zoned for suburban agriculture.
The property has been under the same ownership for 49 years, with a small, dry cabin and an outhouse. The current owner has parked an RV on the site since 2005 and is seeking to develop a wastewater treatment system and potable water system on the property, which current zoning does not allow for.
The conditional use permit would be designated only for the owner’s use, not for a commercial RV park. There would be no public use or renting of the RV space, per the application materials.
The Bigfork Land Use Advisory Committee will consider these applications and accept public comment during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday in the basement of Bethany Lutheran Church at 4 p.m.
After being reviewed by the Bigfork Land Use Advisory Committee, these applications will be voted on by the Flathead County Board of Adjustment at its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
