BUTTE — Glacier’s Maggie Mitton shot the best round of the day and claimed medalist honors at Western AA Divisional golf tournament Tuesday, on a day when both Wolfpack teams qualified for state.

Mitton’s 82 was the best by ton among the girls at the Butte Country Club, and allowed her to surpass Missoula Sentinel standout Maci Reiff down the stretch for a one-stroke win.

Missoula Big Sky’s Charlotte Dale, the first-day leader, ended up third at 176, two strokes behind Mitton. But Dale’s Eagles easily claimed the team title, by 41 strokes over the Spartans.

Helena Capital (798) was third and Glacier (839) was fourth. Glacier’s boys also finished fourth, earning a trip to the State AA tournament Oct. 1-2 at Great Falls’ Meadowlark Country Club.

The top four teams qualified, along with the top eight players not included in those qualified teams. Flathead, fifth in the team race at 949, saw Becky Schmidt, Hadley McDonald and Hayden Ward all earn spots at state.

Glacier overtook the Bravettes on day 2, led by Mitton. She played both sides of the Butte course at 41; teeing off on No. 11 as part of a shotgun start, she bolstered her round with a birdie on the par-5 No. 1.

She made up three strokes on Maci Reiff right there, and her par on No. 9 gave her a one-stroke lead with one hole left. Reiff, who started on No. 10, shot bogey on 9 while Mitton bogeyed her final hole, No. 10.

Lillie Groom finished in the top 15 for Glacier.

While Capital took command of the boys team race, Glacier stayed consistent to claim the final spot into state.

The Bruins shot a sharp 296 on the second day and finished 13 strokes up on Sentinel at 597. Butte (619) was third, followed by Glacier (629).

Leading the way for Glacier was Torren Murray, who shot 74 on Tuesday, and Tripp O’Boyle, who shot one of the day’s best scores: a 73 with three birdies.

Louis Groom gave the Wolfpack another top-15 golfer.

Flathead’s top boys individual was Talon McDonald, who shot 85 Tuesday and finished 31st with a two-day total of 177.
