SANDPOINT — Longtime Bonner General Health volunteer and Auxiliary Chairwoman Margo Johnson has been named the recipient of the Idaho Hospital Association’s 2026 Leader of Volunteer Excellence Award, recognizing her decades of commitment to the hospital and community.
For nearly 28 years, Johnson has donated more than 11,300 volunteer hours to Bonner General Health, serving patients, staff and fellow volunteers. Her service has made her a familiar presence throughout the hospital and a key figure in the organization’s volunteer programs.
Johnson has held every office within the Bonner General Health Auxiliary and has served as chairwoman for the past 11 years. During that time, she has helped lead fundraising efforts that generated more than $100,000 through events and donations. The proceeds have supported departments throughout the hospital by providing equipment, resources and educational scholarships for employees.
Beyond fundraising, Johnson has played a central role in recruiting and coordinating volunteers, helping match individuals with roles that best fit their talents and interests. She also organizes volunteer appreciation events, holiday celebrations and other activities aimed at recognizing and retaining volunteers.
Among the Auxiliary’s signature events is the annual Parade of Trees celebration, where hospital departments decorate trees that are later auctioned. The event has become a popular holiday tradition within the organization, with Johnson helping coordinate and oversee its success each year.
Her dedication also shows in day-to-day interactions with patients and visitors. Johnson was recently recognized as Bonner General Health’s Volunteer of the Month after assisting a visually impaired patient through the hospital, an example of the personal attention and care that has characterized her volunteer service.
At 86, Johnson continues to volunteer regularly, remaining active in supporting hospital operations and community outreach efforts. Hospital leaders say her work has influenced countless patients, caregivers, volunteers and community members while helping ensure the Auxiliary remains a strong source of support for the organization.
The Idaho Hospital Association’s Leader of Volunteer Excellence Award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional volunteer leadership and service within hospitals and health systems across the state.
“Bonner General Health is a better place because of Margo,” said Shannon Barnes, the hospital’s chief human resources officer. “Her generosity, compassion and commitment have created a legacy that will inspire all of us for many years to come.”
Hospital officials said Johnson’s more than 11,300 hours of service represent nearly three decades of dedication, support and community involvement, leaving a lasting impact on both the organization and those it serves.
Bonner General Health officials congratulated Johnson on the statewide recognition and thanked her for her many years of service to the hospital and the community.
