NIC SOCCER: Gutierrez, Cardinal men come up clean

WORLEY — Nathan Gutierrez, a freshman from Lake Worth, Fla., had three saves in goal for 10th-ranked North Idaho College in a 4-0 win over 13th ranked Utah State-Eastern in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at the Marimn Health Coeur Center on Thursday. 

"He hasn't had a ton of saves, but when he has, he's done really well," said NIC men's soccer coach Brad Williams of Gutierrez, who posted his third straight clean sheet. "His distribution is really good in the ball and I'm just really happy with his communication overall." 

Sophomore Sebastiano Casini from Bologna, Italy, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute for NIC (9-0-1, 6-0 SWAC), which hosts Salt Lake on Saturday in Worley. The Bruins are fourth in this week's NJCAA poll. 

Utah State-Eastern is 5-3-2, 3-2-1.

WORLEY — Brooklyn Sperry, a freshman goalkeeper from Payson, Utah, had one save and freshman Kenadie Mashore from Las Vegas had two saves for the Cardinals in a draw with the 18th-ranked Golden Eagles of Price, Utah, at the Marimn Health Coeur Center. 

"Brooklyn came up with a good stop in the first half that was huge for us," NIC women's coach Luke Babson said. "Kenadie had missed the last two weeks with an injury, but she's back now healthy and had some really good moments as well. We just defended well in front of them and didn't give them a lot of opportunities today." 

NIC (6-2-3, 3-1-2 SWAC) hosts Salt Lake on Saturday. The Bruins are ranked seventh in this week's NJCAA poll. 

Utah State-Eastern is 5-4-1, 3-2-1.
