The Rotary Club of Sandpoint and the Ponderay Centennial Rotary Clubs will co-host the annual “Mini-RYLA” (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) camp this November 6-8 at Camp Lutherhaven in Coeur d’Alene.

This three-day leadership development experience is offered to students in grades 9-12.  Students with an interest in personal growth as emerging leaders of self and others are recruited from Sandpoint area high schools, home schooled students, and online learning platforms. Leadership knowledge and skill development stem from participation in activities, service projects, and social events.  The event is free to participating students and their families.   All costs are covered by the sponsoring Rotary Clubs.

Examples of leadership themes explored at camp include self-awareness, team building, conflict resolution, communication and public speaking, and peacebuilding.  Various well-established leadership models are used as frameworks for learning.  Throughout the weekend, each student discovers their unique gifts, strengths, and value as a leader.

Free time during and around mealtime, sitting around evening campfires, and sharing free time during the weekend, give students precious time to connect and socialize with new friends.  They learn that they are more similar than different.  It’s not unusual for Mini-RYLArians to leave camp and go on to become lifelong friends.

Mini-RYLA alumni, when reflecting on their own experience at camp, say that this training has helped them discover their unique strengths and their value as leaders.

If you would like to support the Sandpoint area Rotary Clubs' efforts to bring this program to our youth, please plan to attend “Bingo Night!”, a Bingo fundraiser on Monday, October 5th at the Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St. in Sandpoint. Doors open at 6:00 PM and Bingo runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. Come and join the fun.
