Lake City 35, Sandpoint 27 

COEUR d'ALENE — The Sandpoint Bulldogs left the locker room at Lake City High down 21-7 on Friday night; what followed was exactly what most expected of the No. 3 team in 5A. 

Sandpoint's ferocious defense forced a three-and-out, then the offense rode Trenton Cross down the field for a touchdown. Then, the Bulldogs did it again to tie the Timberwolves 21-21 with 11 minutes left in the game. 

"We came out of the locker room playing like we should," Sandpoint head coach Ryan Knowles said. "That's what I expect out of this team, and I've seen them do it in spurts, but we haven't seen them do it in a full game, and sure enough we reverted back and let Lake City back in the game." 

Lake City's Brayden Van Leuven had killed Sandpoint all game, starting early with a 47-yard touchdown run on the Timberwolves' third play from scrimmage. Van Leuven reared his head again shortly after Sandpoint's tying touchdown with a 45-yard touchdown that put the Timberwolves back in the driver's seat. 

The Bulldogs' offense couldn't muster a response, and the Timberwolves, led by a sophomore quarterback wearing No. 40, took advantage yet again. The elevated quarterback Jax Pearson found Landon Leveque for a 14-yard touchdown to put the game on ice. 

"Our inability to stop the run and inability to run the ball and not take care of the ball on special teams, [those are] really three things we talk about constantly, and I don't think we did a very good job of all three of those," Knowles said. "I thought Lake City did a good job of all those three and deserved to win." 

Sandpoint was their own worst enemy early in this game. Quarterback Logan Iverson threw two ugly interceptions, and the Bulldogs muffed a punt in the first half. Those turnovers buried the momentum that Knowles had hoped to build by taking the ball to open the game. 

Despite the rough start, Iverson and the Bulldogs rebounded in the second half. Iverson ended the day with 231 passing yards and three touchdown passes, one to Cross, one to Knox Williams and one to Jack Schriber. Brock Yarbrough led the Bulldogs in receiving yet again with seven catches for 94 yards. 

On the ground, Sandpoint went without star running back Jensen Sheetz for the second game in a row, with Cross stepping up in his absence. Cross was the engine of the Bulldog offense and ended the day with over 100 total yards and a touchdown. Knowles said Sheetz is on the road to recovery but didn't specify when the Bulldogs could expect him back. 

With the non-league loss, Sandpoint drops to 4-2 on the season. Knowles said he believes the loss will come back to hurt the Bulldogs in MaxPreps' rankings and was frustrated that the team couldn't capitalize on this opportunity. 

"[This] is a good chance to face some adversity and show we can handle it. All our goals are still in front of us," Knowles said. "This team is going to be resilient, I promise you that." 

The Bulldogs' mid-season gauntlet continues with their homecoming matchup against 4A Moscow on Oct. 2 at War Memorial Field at 7 p.m.

Clark Fork 46, Lakeside 12 

CLARK FORK — The homecoming festivities powered Clark Fork High to their best offensive performance of the season and a dominant win over the Lakeside Knights on Friday night. 

The Wampus Cats' defense smothered the 2A Lakeside offense for their most impressive win of the year so far. Further details were not available at the time of publishing. 

Clark Fork jumped to 2-3 on the season and will get a week of rest before their next game. The Wampus Cats will travel to Wallace at Sather Field in Silverton on Oct. 9.   

Logos 35, Bonners Ferry 0 

BONNERS FERRY — Miscues and mistakes undid the Bonners Ferry Badgers against the Logos Knights this homecoming week on Friday. 

The Badgers started the game with a fumble, which the Knights recovered, on their second play from scrimmage. That play was representative of the entire game for Bonners Ferry as they turned the ball over several times and never built momentum on either side of the ball. 

"We were out coached and outplayed," Bonners Ferry head coach Danny Swift said. "They played a great football game and had a great game plan. They executed it well, and they get all the credit in the world. We got to go back to practice next week and just get better." 

The Knights' offense asserted their will on a very good Badgers' front-7. Logos' quarterback Baxter Covington posted 250 rushing yards and four touchdowns, according to the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. That is the most rushing yards the Badgers have allowed in a game anytime so far this season. 

Swift said his team will work on being more focused and working to execute and overcome adversity during this week of practice. After six weeks of action, the Badgers finally get a bye this week, which will give them time to recover and work on their issues. 

"We'll embrace this bye week... and make the best of that to rest, recover and refocus," Swift said. "[Then] we will attack the rest of the season, one day at a time. We've got Moscow in two weeks, so that'll be a big one." 

Bonners Ferry will travel to Moscow for an Intermountain League showdown on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. following their week of rest.
