Sept. 27, 1976 – SHS NEWS

Senior journalists who compose the Cedar Post staff, distributed last Friday the first fall issue of the Cedar Post, Idaho’s only weekly high school newspaper. That evening the first athletic programs, for which Cedar Post staff have been busy selling ads, were distributed at the football game here.

Student Council last week approved a Football Festival dance Oct. 8.

The Senior Class will sponsor a sock-hop Oct. 22 after the Bulldogs-Mead football game. It will start right after the game in the SHS gym.

The Monticola class is taking candid pictures of the students around SHS. Ken Carter and Skip Harris are the main photographers and editors.

HELICOPTER LOGGING ON LIGHTNING

Helicopter logging of 4.1 million board ft. of timber will begin within the next 10 days in the Lightning Creek drainage north of Clark Fork, with up to 30 loads of logs a day coming out of the area. Sawyers are already at work along Lightning Creek near the mouth of Rattle Creek. Columbia Helicopters, Inc., which bought the sale, has a small copter at work now transporting sawyers and moving supplies. The timber sale, involving mostly over-mature white pine being lost to disease and insects, will require about 25 flying days. The logging helicopter can move up to 7,000 pounds of logs at this elevation, which, in the case of some of the 5’ diameter white pine that will be cut, amounts to only one 16’ log.

Sept. 20, 1951 – CITY IN BRIEF

Sept. 27, 1951 – SUSTAINS EYE INJURY

Paul Tillberg Sr. was treated at the North Idaho clinic Saturday for injuries to his right eye received when his glasses were broken by a nail that flew up from work he was doing at the Cabinet Gorge project. Several pieces of glass had been removed from the eye in first aid treatment at the project. More glass was removed at the clinic. Although the injury was painful it was not believed to be serious.

NEW SHINGLE MILL HIT BY FIRE

Thursday afternoon fate again touched a fiery finger to the newly organized Cedar Products, Inc. when fire destroyed approximately 375,000 feet of cedar logs decked at the mill’s new location north and east of Kootenai. The loss was estimated at around $10,000. After the plant, which had been located at the top of the hill above the “Y” on highway 2 north of Sandpoint, was destroyed by fire on June 19, the owners had moved operations to the  site near Kootenai. The new mill had been running only a week when the stockpile of logs burned. Mill operations will continue despite the setback of this second fire, said owners Clyde Cox, Carl Gerke, Cecil Tibbetts and Walter Erickson.
