NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men remain composed, remain in first in SWAC standings

WORLEY — North Idaho College landed the first shot on a goal by Caden Pennock two minutes into Saturday's Scenic West Athletic Conference match at the Marimn Health Coeur Center. 

Salt Lake landed another, then scored a tying goal in the 75th minute as the fourth-ranked Bruins and 10th-ranked Cardinals played to a 1-1 draw. 

"I felt they tried to make it an emotional game and they did everything they could to get us emotional and out of what we wanted to do," NIC coach Brad Williams said. "I'm proud of our guys for staying calm and not giving in. We'll probably have to play them two more times, and it's going to be more of a chippy match. But I think they wanted it." 

Salt Lake goalkeeper Ariel Martinez, an NIC transfer, was ejected in the 73rd minute for punching Pennock, a former teammate, in the face, Williams said.

NIC (10-0-2, 6-0-1 SWAC) leads the conference, with Salt Lake (7-0-3, 4-0-3) in second. 

"I'm proud of our guys for staying composed," Williams said. "We're still in first place in the league and now we get to reset the conference." 

NIC hosts Pacific Northwest Christian next Saturday at Eisenwinter Field.

WORLEY — The Cardinals dropped to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play with a loss to the seventh-ranked Bruins (9-0-1, 6-0-1) at the Marimn Health Coeur Center. 

Seanna Harris scored two goals in the second half for Salt Lake.

COEUR d'ALENE — Brynlie Cornia, a freshman from Nibley, Utah, had 13 kills for the Cardinals in a 21-25, 25-17, 28-26, 25-18 loss to the fifth-ranked Bruins in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at Christianson Gymnasium. 

Camryn Farrar, a freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, had seven kills and 10 digs, freshman Taylin Everingham of Coeur d'Alene 12 digs and freshman Zoe Galbreath of Ritzville, Wash., had 17 assists for NIC (16-6, 2-2 SWAC), which hosts Colorado Northwestern next Friday and Saturday. 

Cameron Zajer had 15 kills and eight digs for Salt Lake (15-4, 3-1).
