PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur du Christ scores big win over Salmon River

FOOTBALL

RIGGINS — The undefeated Coeur du Christ Saints posted perhaps their most impressive victory of the football season Saturday. 

Coeur du Christ, ranked fifth in 1A by MaxPreps, defeated the host Salmon River Savages, ranked fourth in 1A, 40-18. 

Junior quarterback Grant Clemens ran for three touchdowns and passes for two more for the Saints (5-0). 

Matthew Junkin forced a fumble and recovered it in the first quarter for Coeur du Christ, and caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter. 

Clemens and Beckett Beyer each had interceptions in the second quarter, and Beyer caught a TD pass in the second quarter. 

Jon Denke ran 1 yard for the game's first score, in the first quarter. Denke, a running back/linebacker who came into the game nursing an ankle injury, re-aggravated the injury in the first quarter. The Saints' other two backs are already out.

“Very proud of how our guys competed against a very well-coached Salmon River team," Coeur du Christ coach Kellen Clemens said. "They battled through some injuries and showed a lot of grit to close out the game the way they did.” 

Salmon River is 5-1. 

Coeur du Christ plays host to Potlatch for homecoming next Friday at the Marimn Health Coeur Center in Worley.

Post Falls at Crossover Classic 

SPOKANE — The Trojans went undefeated in seven matches, and went on to win the Silver Bracket at the Sheridan-Welch Crossover Classic. 

In pool play, Post Falls beat Reardan 25-17, 25-15, split with Davis of Yakima 25-17, 19-25 and split with Clarkston 22-25, 25-14. 

Winning four of six sets in pool play, the Trojans finished behind Davis (5-1), which advanced to the Gold Bracket. 

In the Silver Bracket, Post Falls won all four matches, beating Oakesdale 25-18, 25-21, Eastmont (East Wenatchee) 25-16, 25-20, Eisenhower (Yakima) 25-15, 25-17 and, in the championship match, Lewis and Clark 25-17i, 25-21. 

Freshman Peyton Barclift totaled 72 kills, 55 digs and seven aces in the tourney for Post Falls (18-3). Senior Teresa Smith had 46 kills, 61 digs and six aces, senior Annabelle Tucker 36 kills and eight aces, senior Lucy Carr 79 assists and eight aces, sophomore Lucy Smith 55 assists, sophomore Danica Pratt 46 digs, junior Khloe Neal and senior Malia Uemoto seven blocks. 

"It was a tale of two halves for us today," Post Falls coach Casey Cornett said. "We came out emotionally flat during pool play, which cost us a spot in the gold bracket after splitting sets with teams we felt we should have beaten. What impressed me most was how the team responded once we hit bracket play. They completely turned the corner, got back to having fun and playing for each other, and swept every single match on the way to winning the Silver Division. That ability to refocus and finish strong was huge." 

Post Falls plays host to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday in the annual Volleyball 4 the Cure match for breast cancer awareness. 

Kellogg at Crossover Classic 

SPOKANE — The Wildcats won their pool and qualified for the top (Gold) bracket at the Sheridan-Welch Crossover Classic. 

In pool play, Kellogg swept Shadle Park 25-15, 25-19, Nooksack Valley 25-13, 25-17 and Eastmont 25-9, 25-22. 

In the Gold Bracket, Kellogg lost to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls 25-21, 30-28.  

In the Gold consolation bracket, Kellog beat Jackson and Freeman in one-set matches to advance to the consolation championship match, where the Wildcats fell to Glacier Peak 26-24. 

"I'm very proud of the way our team played today," Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. "We played much higher volleyball than we have seen all season, and we grew a ton as a team. It was really fun watching our girls play this level of volleyball." 

Kellogg returns to action Wednesday at home vs. Sandpoint.

POST FALLS — The visiting Miners (6-7, 3-0 Scenic Idaho Conference) beat the Jaguars (0-7, 0-2) at The Courts at Real Life.

Genesis Prep travels to Valor Christian of Sandpoint on Wednesday.

Wallace plays host to Lakeside on Thursday, with a chance to wrap up the league title.
