Coeur d'Alene 2, Sandpoint 0

SANDPOINT — Two first-half goals from Coeur d'Alene were enough to sink Sandpoint on Saturday night at War Memorial Field.

The Vikings pounced on the Bulldogs, coming out of the gates fast and scoring in the 16th minute. Taryn Young capitalized on a corner kick scramble and sent a ball into the back of the net. Coeur d'Alene continued putting the pressure on Sandpoint, with two more shots on goal that were saved by Sandpoint's senior goalkeeper Izzy Stark.

However, the pressure paid off in the 37th minute as a stolen pass turned into a long shot by Isabella Grimmett of Coeur d'Alene that found the back of the net.

While Sandpoint reclaimed much of the momentum in the second half, Coeur d'Alene's backline remained strong and limited the quality chances for the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint fell to 7-5-1 overall with the non-league loss, while Coeur d'Alene improved to 7-3. Next up for the Bulldogs is a showdown with Lake City on Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. Coeur d'Alene is set for their final match at Post Falls on Oct. 3 at 12 p.m.

Sandpoint 1, Coeur d'Alene 1 

COEUR d'ALENE — A non-league battle between North Idaho titans, 9-1-1 Sandpoint and 10-0 Coeur d'Alene, ended in a 1-1 draw at Coeur d'Alene High School on Saturday afternoon. 

The 5A Bulldogs struck first thanks to their red-hot junior midfielder Pax Longanecker. Sandpoint put Coeur d'Alene's backline under pressure and played a through ball that bounced off Longanecker and into the goal to make the game 1-0. 

"We went toe to toe with them the entire match, very evenly contested," Sandpoint head coach Dan Anderson said. "Our boys absolutely battled for the whole 80 minutes." 

What followed was an intense and evenly matched first half, where both teams had opportunities but failed to add to their score. Sandpoint's keeper Landon Brinkmeier ended the day with four saves on five shots while Coeur d'Alene's Grant Johnson made three saves on four shots. 

The Vikings came out of the second half trailing but continued to apply pressure on Brinkmeier and the Bulldogs' backline. Eventually, they broke through in the 68th minute with a rocket from junior forward Rowan Wyatt finishing off a goal on the far post to tie the game. 

Anderson said Sandpoint stayed aggressive after giving up the goal and had a few more chances to sneak one by but couldn't finish the opportunities. Both teams failed to find the back of the net again and settled for an intense draw that will leave both sides battle-tested. 

"I know they're walking away feeling very proud of the way they played today," Anderson said of his Sandpoint boys team. "Feel a little bit disappointed that they didn't get the win, as I felt they very much deserved." 

The draw brings Coeur d'Alene to 10-0-1 during the season, while Sandpoint moves to 9-1-2 overall. The Vikings will prepare for a bout with Upper Columbia Academy at Coeur d'Alene High on Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m. 

Sandpoint will hope to carry their momentum into consecutive league showdowns with Lewiston, the first of which is set for Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. at War Memorial Field.
