Michael E. Thoennes, 77

Michael E. Thoennes, 77, passed away on Sept. 12, 2026, at Logan Health Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife, partner, and friend, Nancy the light of his life; and three children Rosie (Mike), Rhonda (Jon), and Richard (Audrey); three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mike started his own gravel business in Arizona. In Washington he helped build the Kingdome and worked as a crane operator at Boeing and a bus driver for Sound Transit in Seattle. In Montana, he worked for A-1 paving, American Asphalt, and Flathead County as a truck driver building and maintaining roads.

Mike loved racing - either watching it on TV or participating in all aspects in Kalispell. He built and raced his own cars in claimers and street stocks. He filled in driving other cars when needed. He was the president and served on the Board of Directors for the club and helped to start the Hall of Fame, which recognized anyone who did the most for racing that year. He remarked often on the joy and camaraderie this group brought him.

He was active in the Special Olympics, expressing his admiration for "these kids." Mike and Nancy ran the Track and Field meets for special athletes in Flathead County and in surrounding areas.

Mike thrived in Kalispell with the love of his family, the fellowship of his numerous friends and colleagues, and the extraordinary peace and beauty of Montana.
