Boys soccer split last week, readies for Whitefish

The Columbia Falls boys soccer team split last week. They beat Plains/Thompson Falls 9-2 at home last Tuesday, but lost to Bigfork on the road Thursday, 3-1.
The Cats scored early and often against Blue Hawks, with Chance Pfeifle scoring just two minutes into the contest.
In addition to Pfieifle, White Albrecht, Eli Crockett, Easton Corbett, Caleb Hutchins, Darius Shaw, Jake Coburn and Logan Ruggerio all found the back of the net.
Hutchins had two goals as did Pfieifle.
Soren Pietzsch had two assists. Thompson Falls also suffered from an own goal as well.
The Cats scored four in the first half and five in the second.
Coach O’Brien Byrd noted that five players scored their first ever varsity goal, including seniors Ruggerio and Crockett.
Against Bigfork the Cats found themselves down 2-0 after 25 minutes. Darius Shaw would answer with a feed from Whit Albrecht to make it 2-1 at the 31-minute mark, but they couldn’t close the gap. Bigfork added an insurance goal 53 minutes in to seal the win.
Byrd said the Cats simply didn’t meet the intensity of the Bigfork players.
“We couldn’t overcome the intensity that Bigfork brought to that game,” Byrd said, “It looked like they wanted it more than us.”
He said this week the young team will be working its intensity level in practice.
The Cats are now 6-6 overall and 4-4 in league play. The Cats blanked Bigfork at home, 2-0 earlier in the season.
They face Browning on the road Thursday and then a rematch against Whitefish Saturday at home for homecoming. Game time is 11 a.m.
The last matchup the Cats were shutout by the Bulldogs 3-0.
