PREP ROUNDUP: Lambert wins in card-off at Circling Raven

WORLEY — Lake City High senior Trey Lambert earned boys medalist in a card-off with Rocky Mountain's Thomas Mercado at the Circling Raven Invitational at Circling Raven Golf Club on Tuesday. 

Lambert and Mercado tied with a 2-under-par 70, but Lambert won the card off after posting a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. Mercado finished with a par. 

"What is special about Trey is that even in tough conditions like today, he has the ability to settle in and play his game," Lake City boys coach Nik Bjurstrom said. "His consistency and mental game have been amazing this season, no matter the conditions and it is one of the things that makes him a truly fantastic golfer." 

Rocky Mountain won the boys team title with a 308. 

Rocky Mountain shot a 315 earn the girls team title. On Monday, Coeur d'Alene edged the Grizzlies of Meridian by one stroke for the girls team title in the Susan Mitchell Invitational at Hayden Lake Country Club. 

Allison Cantlon of Rocky Mountain was girls medalist with a 1-over-par 73. 

"We fought through some cold and windy conditions, and I'm super proud of our team's effort," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. 

The 6A District 1 tournament is Monday at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls. 

The state 6A tournament is Oct. 12-13 at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden.

PONDERAY — Sophomore Lila Moreau had two goals and two assists for the Timberwolves in a win over the Bulldogs at the Field of Dreams Complex, clinching home field advantage for the best-of-3 game 6A Region 1 tournament. 

"Lila just found herself in some good spots in the attacking end," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. "We'd talked about getting her up the field more, and she did a good job of that today." 

Lake City (10-2) and Coeur d’Alene (7-3) split their regular season matches, with the tiebreaker coming from goal differential in the two 6A IEL matches between the schools. Lake City defeated Coeur d’Alene 2-0 on Sept. 8 and Coeur d’Alene beat the Timberwolves 1-0 on Sept. 19.

Lake City hosts Coeur d'Alene in Game 1 of the district series next Wednesday, with Game 2 at Coeur d'Alene High on Oct. 10, and an if-necessary game on Oct. 13 back at Lake City High. 

Lake City hosts Cheney on Saturday to conclude the regular season.

POST FALLS — Senior Oliver Soumis recorded a hat trick for the Timberwolves in a 6A Inland Empire League win over the Trojans at Post Falls High. 

Senior Henry Weimer-Earnest, junior Cale Hanners and sophomore Collin Rzepa also scored for Lake City (7-5, 2-2 6A IEL), which travels to Sandpoint next Tuesday. 

"The boys showed today with real determination and a commitment to bring together everything we've been building all season," Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. "They're beginning to truly understand what playing for each other looks like. The growth is real, and I'm proud of the direction this group is moving."

Post Falls (2-8, 0-3) hosts Coeur d'Alene Charter on Thursday. 

"Normally, we come out strong in the second half, but we did not do that today," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "We came out flat and had a midfielder that got hurt, and it just went downhill at that point. It just felt like we couldn't gather ourselves after a couple of moments in the game."
