As we have written many times we try a lot of wine on a weekly basis, and we mean a lot! The normal week will be anywhere between 30 and 50 wines, some are new to us and the market others are the just released vintages of wines we know well. Others still are from new distributors to the market which to us is the most exciting. We never turn those opportunities down as it is our best chance to try things we have not previously sampled. All of this tasting provides us with a great opportunity to bring new things to consumers, and provide for a truly unique and innovative wine collection, after all there is so much great wine out there from all over the world, why take the chance of missing out?

We all know Champagne, right? It’s bubbly and festive and many of us may even think it is sweet, which it can be, but not always. But what really makes this most festive of wines really delicious for the most enthusiastic bubbly drinkers? There are many unique things that allow a sparkling wine to be called Champagne. Of course, it does have to come from the Champagne region of France, this specific geographical area to the north of Burgundy and to the west of Lorraine and Alsace. It is a part of Northeastern France that contributes much to the grapes used in Champagne manufacturing. Two of the three grapes we know quite well, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the two dominant grapes of Burgundy just to the south of Champagne and their lesser-known compatriot grape Pinot Meunier.

We're in!

Just over a month ago, The Dinner Party started on what is the most monumental undertaking of our 12 years in business here in Coeur d’Alene. Not only for us, but more importantly, for our customers and wine consumers here in North Idaho. We started the process of moving and expanding our shop to twice its original size. We are now in the new shop and have been open for business for about a month. Virtually all of the “work” is completed, with the biggest exception being our outside signs, which are now on the way.

What is a wine worth? Any wine? That is probably the single most challenging decision that any winery faces, where to price their wine to keep the winery as a whole financially viable, while also ensuring that wine consumers will find value in the bottle. The decision for wineries is far more daunting that it is for customers. After all for customers it is pretty straight forward. I pay “$X” for a bottle I drink it and our palates and preferences ultimately tell us it is worth it or not.
