Don't cry over spilled (or spoiled) milk anymore

Especially for consumers who do drink milk, but not a lot of it — Ultra Pasteurized Milk! One of my pet peeves is opening a carton of milk that I remember having just purchased, (to be completely honest, sometimes I forget how long ago I actually purchased it!), and pouring out totally spoiled milk that resembles rotten yogurt instead of nice fresh milk. Last time I did this it was so bad that when I poured it down the disposal, the disposal started gagging!

Granny's got a gun

I just got a call from a grandma in Post Falls. She wanted to tell me how she handled the “grandma call” — you know, the one where the caller pretends to be the consumer’s grandchild. This consumer had a unique way of shutting down the would-be scam artist.

Beware charity auction items with strings

People in our area are truly generous. A consumer called me with a sad story. It made me angry as I listened to him.

Hard questions for vigilant consumers

There seems to be recent resurgence of very aggressive, itinerant door-to-door sales people in our area. (Why don’t these people show up in the middle of a North Idaho winter?) So far this year, it seems to be limited to roving bands of 20-somethings hawking satellite and cable television services. According to several callers, the game goes like this:

When financial pressure squeezes your brain

Debts and liens are not the same! This week I had a consumer call me with a real problem. The consumer had gone through filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, then tried selling their home to cash out the equity and start over.

Flying pets, CBD and mysterious callers

FLYING PETS: There has been much about the deaths of pets on board commercial airline flights. United Airlines has been involved in a number of these unfortunate incidents. United has just come out with a total ban on transporting certain types of pets. It turns out, after much study, that dogs (and cats), with short noses — brachycephalic animals — are unusually susceptible to death while being transported on commercial air carriers.

Sorry, but a horrible contract can still be a legal contract

One very dedicated consumer called me with what I consider to be legitimate concerns about the long-term lease that an owner was insisting a lessor sign in order to be able to purchase a home. The prospective homeowner actually owns the home but not the property on which it sits, much like a mobile home in a mobile home park.

'I'll sue!' But irked consumers rarely do

While most of us have never actually gone to court over a consumer issue, we’ve all felt like throwing down the legal gauntlet at least a few times in our lives. The problem is that often, the amount of money in question isn’t large, or the circumstance surrounding our situation isn’t clear (like not having a contract).
