Syrah re-turning

One of the most confusing and at times confounding trends in the wine industry the last several years is the foundering of Syrah sales. Syrah is the principal red grape from the Rhone Valley in France as well as the Chateauneuf du Pape A.O.C. Chateauneuf du Pape translates to "New Castle of the Pope" from when the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church moved the Papacy to Avignon near Lyon, in the Rhone Valley. In addition, the grape does great in nearby Washington state and many parts of California, and when customers try it they will almost always buy a bottle. However, when it just comes to folks walking into the shop, no one seems to care.

A fall full of wine events

Fall is our favorite time of year, and it is not just the crisp days, wonderful colors and football that we enjoy so much but also the great events in the wine industry. While the 2011 harvest has been less than joyful in wine country, the cool growing season and early rains have resulted in lengthening harvest and crush. We have heard from many of our customers who have recently traveled to California and the wine growing regions of Washington and Idaho that there is still a lot of fruit hanging, so if you have never seen "the crush" or if you have and liked it there is still time to strike out to the vineyards, and witness this annual ritual firsthand.

The Ephrata Senior Center also offers Stay Active & Independent for Life - SAIL - classes at no cost 2-3 times per week. Go thrifting! The Ephrata Senior Center operates a senior thrift shop.
