All appearing will be Shane Magnuson to talk about the Icicle River and summer-run salmon.

KOOTENAI: Say no to zoning code

As a child, my family lived on a farm. My grandparents lived on the same farm, so we would often walk to visit them. My wife was also raised on a farm. Her uncle lived in a separate house and their extended family dined together. These were good times, not bad ones. The Unified Land Use Code proposed for Kootenai County will no longer allow for this arrangement on most rural properties. Some may think this lifestyle is no longer important. Perhaps that is true in some of our more urban neighborhoods, but family values and close family associations are still alive and well here in the country. I can think of at least 12 neighbors with two houses on their properties, typically for family members. Children come back home. Retirees return from the city.

Betty Joyce Barton, 75

Betty Joyce Barton, 75, passed away at Kalispell Regional Medical Center on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Betty was born Oct. 21, 1934, in Amarillo, Texas, to Clebert and Alveda (Murty) McCrary. Betty was raised in Campbell, Calif., and married Kenn Barton in San Jose, Calif., in 1951. They had been married for 59 years. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son, Chris Barton; and a brother, William McCrary. She is survived by her husband, Kenn, of Kalispell; children, Craig and Cindy Barton of Kalispell, and Curtis Barton of Morgan Hill, Calif.; sisters, Carol Rezendez and Wynette Fleming; brothers, Bill Murty, Bob McCrary, Wayne Parsons and Donnie McRary; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah s Witnesses, 1100 W. Reserve St., Kalispell. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah s Witnesses in Betty Barton s name.
