Margaret was born Nov. 6, 1902, in Bethany, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Theresa (McGuffy) Tullis. As a small child, her family moved to Leon, Iowa, where she grew up.

He moved a partition that had separated his Pastime Cigar Store from the billiard room to make space for a lunch counter.
