Documents recently “re-discovered” at the Montana Department of Environmental Quality in Helena not only provide a revealing look at the scope of the oil pollution in the Whitefish River before effective action was taken at the BNSF Railway facility — they also pinpoint a potential pollution source that DEQ officials currently overseeing the Superfund site were not aware existed.

By the time this column “hits” the paper, and the paper lands on your doorstep, it will be September 4th, and we will be in the Labor Day holiday weekend. While this means we are about to enter the fall season, it also means we are about to start our winemaker dinners and tastings again.

The power of wine

Long before we ever had the glimmer of an idea of opening the dinner party Mary and I entertained. A lot. The inspiration for the shop was commentary from our guests that “you guys throw the best dinner parties.” It was a great compliment, and we very much enjoyed doing it. Mary normally focused on setting the table and creating a wonderful mood with everything from art to music to flowers. My focus was on the food and wine and together they worked, we had a blast as did our guests, and they enjoyed the total experience.

Looking forward to spring

We know from our day to day conversations with customers in the shop that winter has worn on all of us a bit this year. We are happy for our many friends that have been able to “bug out” to warmer and drier climes. In the meantime though we will look forward to the spring release wines coming this year. We have had a preview with several we have tried recently and we are excited by the quality we have seen thus far.

In the park’s early days, it wasn’t unusual for these behemoth mammals to walk right up to visitor vehicles chugging along Going-to-the-Sun Road. Vintage photos depict bears sometimes half crawling over cars or peeking into windows, while drivers offered up bits of food or stood a few yards off, firing away on their cameras. The visitors got the wildlife encounters they came for and the bears were treated to an easy lunch.
