The process of creating great wine is one that requires equal doses of art and science. The best winemakers we have encountered over the years we have been involved in the wine business balance these two key and constantly shifting "ingredients" to craft delicious wines. Each time they approach a varietal or blend of varietals, from an ever-changing palette of vintages they must reassess the role each of these components plays.

Drought and other questions

After my recent trip to Napa, I received questions from readers and customers about the state of wine country, from the arsenic lawsuit to the effects of the drought on wine production. There is nothing like spending time with folks up and down the "chain of command" at wineries - from executives to winemakers to growers and cellar folks - to get first hand answers.

To Som or not to Som…

Sommelier, a word and a role that a few years back not many of us paid much attention to has now taken on a spot in popular culture that is astonishing to many of us. It has spawned books, mini-series and even movies about the arduous task of becoming a master sommelier. For those that pursue the designation, and there are many right now, it is a huge commitment of time and money. Many who start down the path view it as a sort of ticket to future riches and rewards working in the wine business. Is it though?

Working with the greats

As we often do during dinner, this past week we had a movie on while we enjoyed a glass or two of wine and our meal. I don’t even remember the name of the movie but I do remember that Paul Newman was in it. The film looked to have been made late in his epic career, he looked old. As most Newman performances were, it was fabulous. There was a young actor in the movie as well. Mary and I have previously said when watching films like this with great performers side by side with young actors, and commented again during this film that it would have to be daunting. As you are learning your craft to be opposite a legend. Scary, intimidating and daunting. But maybe not, what an opportunity to learn!
