Somers Middle School has passed the halfway point of completion on the bulk of a $15.8 million construction project.

Eureka school project produces twin tiny homes

Over the past school year, students from Eureka High School have spent several hours each day inside a workshop north of town. They’ve driven nails, hung windows, put up sheetrock, sanded, primed and painted. With each step, raw materials partly purchased with federal Covid-19 relief funds have taken on the shape of two identical tiny homes: gray with single-sash windows and black trim, each fully wired and plumbed.

Rising rates on horizon, but how far?

On the heels of the announcement that May was one of the best months in recent history for pending sales of homes comes the Federal Reserve Bank's announcement that Quantitative Easing round three is coming to an end causing fear that interest rates will rise. In fact, interest rates did rise slightly last week - up five one hundredths of a percent. Whether this trend will continue for the short term is hard to say but the uptick in Treasury Bond yields indicates that mortgage rates may have seen the last of their new bottom rates established last month. As of market close on Friday, the yield on Treasury Bonds was up by 0.16 percent from a day earlier. Since mortgage rates are directly affected by these yields, we can anticipate incremental increases to those rates as well.

Optimism for 2013

One doesn't have to look far to see a lot of positive news about the housing market. Interest rates are low, sales of homes are up and home prices are gradually increasing, helping some who lost so much equity in the post-boom decline.

Nighttime visitors prompt call

A woman on U.S. 2 West reported her landlord pounding on her door at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, saying he is going to turn off her utilities. She is being evicted. It was after 1 a.m. when a posse of men showed up at a residence in Bigfork. The caller said the men were trying to break down his door and tried to break windows with rocks. They were gone when deputies arrived minutes later.
