Wildfire and wildfire smoke are certainly issues for the farming of wine grapes, and for producing those grapes into wine. I’m not trying to be funny when I say that the 2020 and 2017 vintages have seared the threat of wildfire smoke into our collective minds as wine consumers. I read with interest, as any wine consumer would, the story published this past week in the Coeur d’Alene Press about research being done at some Western U.S. universities, including “winery U” also known as UC Davis on smoke taint in wine grapes.

Not all wine consumers like Champagne and sparkling wine, but most wine consumers like really good Champagne and sparkling wine. That is a key distinction. The intended implication is that like everything in the wine world there are really fabulous and delicious wines with bubbles and there are a lot of not so fabulous wines with bubbles. It seems to me both as a wine consumer, one who really likes “bubbly,” and as a wine professional that there are places that lend themselves to growing grapes for sparkling wines, and other places that don’t. There are winemakers who are really good at making sparkling wine, and others who should not be attempting the task of producing world class sparkling.

The wine industry like all businesses has its own language. In the world of wine many of the buzz words and frequently used terms are regulated in that organizations have laid down strict requirements on when and how terms can be used. Sparkling wine from places other than the Champagne region in France can’t be marketed as Champagne is just one example.

Glacier visitation up 7.5% over last year

Paul Larson, the acting chief ranger for Glacier told the crowd at the North Fork Interlocal earlier this month that the reservation system appears to be working well and the park, through its social scientist, continues to tweak the numbers. Glacier is doing more with less staff, however. Numerous sources report about a 25% cut in permanent and permanent season staff and a hiring freeze is in effect until Oct. 15. Seasonal staff hiring is down as well. “We’re doing the best we can with the staff we have,” Larson said.
