Commission sets fall chinook harvest season

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission during a meeting in Kellogg on Thursday adopted a recommended harvest season on fall Chinook salmon to open Sept. 1 on the Snake River between Lewiston and Hells Canyon Dam.

PARKING: Honest error is punished

My husband and I went downtown to meet some old friends for dinner at the Iron Horse on Friday, July 25. We went through the Iron Horse parking lot, but it was full. We were running late and went further down Lakeside and finally pulled into the Republic Parking lot. We found the payment receptacle and put in our cash and tapped in our space number. I was in such a hurry and put the receipt in my purse, thinking that since I had put in our space number that it was recorded, not even noticing that it said to put it in your car window.

POT: Cost too high to legalize

I appreciated a recent editorial in the Coeur d’Alene Press regarding risks of legalizing marijuana. While it must be acknowledged there are valid points to be made on both sides of the “to legalize or not” argument, I am concerned some of the costs of increasing access to this drug, to both the individual and to society, have been downplayed or ignored.

CORE: Opt out of SBAC testing

When the Idaho Department of Education embraced Common Core Standards and relinquished all decisions to the nationalized education program, Superintendent Luna told the public it was a great boost for Idaho students. Then the name was changed to Idaho Core Standards as educators and parents questioned the validity and reliability of the standards. Next the Idaho Department of Education contracted to be a lead state with Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) to develop electronic testing with imbedded data mining on students. Again we were told this was the method to create students capable and ready for career and college. As parents and educators questioned the need for expensive testing, security of data and loss of classroom teaching time, the name of the test was changed to ISAT2.

TRANSGENDER CHANGES: Diminishing in Europe

Dr. Riittakertta Kaltiala, a Finnish Psychiatrist and leading gender expert, explained that transgender changes are diminishing in Scandinavia and European countries. The most valid study, one of the few longitudinal done, on 70 pre-teen boys, vetted the boys for mental health needs because two problems have been detected: 1) a prior mental problem, 2) a desire for a quick “fix” by surgery to transgenderism. Unfortunately the “fix” does not alleviate the mental problem which leads to the conclusion that mental health needs to be attended to first rather than physical transitions. Without the basic problem alleviated, the unsatisfactory result of transgender change is remaining unhappiness, mental confusion and sometimes suicide.
