Hats off to veterans

Civilians coping with the demands of everyday life often forget the sacrifice of our soldiers. As we pay the rent and go shopping and raise our children, we take for granted our relative security and prosperity compared to the rest of the world. Soldiers, however, know all too well the chaos and turmoil of trouble spots because they witnessed it firsthand. May is National Military Appreciation Month and a fitting time to recognize the sacrifices American service members and their families make for freedom.

Rihanna, pentagrams and other nonsense

No, Rihanna wasn’t wearing a belt with a Satanic pentagram during the Super Bowl halftime show (it was just a safety harness). No, President Biden’s claim that billionaires pay an average income tax of 3% — nor his previously stated 8% — isn’t the full picture (with taxes, it depends on the data used, and some calculations did provide those two numbers, but one neutral fact-checker cites economists who say the top 25 billionaires pay an average 16%, or 1% more than the average school teacher). No, the city of Atlanta didn’t ban the word “women;” its website alone is replete with it. America’s teachers aren’t closet pedophiles nor are its cops.

Boys & Girls Club to offer free summer meals

MOSES LAKE — The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin will be offering breakfast and lunch for children again this summer. And this time, they’re offering it in more places. “We’re doubling our location sites,” said Cecily Hendricks, director of operations for the club. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the McGraw Clubhouse and North and Midway elementary schools, according to an announcement from the club. Lunch only will be served at Lakeview, Maple Grove and Doolittle parks. They’re free to any child 2-18 years old; there’s no need to be a Club member, the announcement said. Parents can pick up meals for their children by filling out a form. Because Moses Lake qualifies as rural, the meals don’t have to be eaten onsite.

EPD and SLPD tackle Shop With a Cop together

EPHRATA — While Shop With a Cop is not a new concept to law enforcement in the Columbia Basin, this is the first time that the Soap Lake and Ephrata Police Departments joined forces to host their separate events together this year. Shop With a Cop is an annual event where law enforcement will take selected families in need in their area Christmas shopping. It always brings smiles to all involved. Soap Lake Police Chief Ryan Cox said his favorite part, year after year, is seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and the burdens lifted from their parents’ shoulders.
