Haunted by the silence

In years past, as an active duty member of our armed forces, and in recent years as a military retiree, I have had the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. and the many monuments dedicated there to the service of our men and women who have sacrificed all in the defense of our nation.

Democrats ignoring GOP's calls for reform

If David Keyes’ reporting (January 30) of Walt Minnick’s points is accurate, Minnick can be held accountable by replacing him in November.  My point relates to the extremely misleading presentation of several points, at least in the reporting.

Fire season in the North Fork early

I am writing this column on June 21st, the first day of summer and Lee Downes' anniversary of his 21st birthday. June is supposed to be one of the wettest months of the year, if not the wettest. It will really have to pour it on between now and the 30th for that to be true this year.

Polson Seniors: Irish were so practical

St. Patrick’s Day is on Sunday this year, and I researched some old Irish laws concerning monks. “A layman may have six pints of beer with his dinner. Rwandans mark genocide anniversary under nationwide lockdown

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — For Augustine Ngabonziza, a survivor of Rwanda’s genocide, it’s difficult not to wonder whether God has become more distant these days. How else can one explain why a country that always comes together for the anniversary of the killings is now confined at home?
