Autumn ecology, fall birding class set
Fall is a time of changes, when plants and animals start to prepare for the long winter months ahead. From September to November, some birds of prey known as raptors, and other birds travel due to scarcity of food during winter. Area residents are invited to take part in an interesting field day of learning about autumn ecology and fall birding on Saturday, Oct. 15, to spend a day exploring for and studying birds, mammals, and vegetation, and their adaptations to prepare for winter. Instructors are college educated with decades of field experience.

Tribal grizzly bear management zone closed
FLATHEAD RESERVATION — McDonald Peak and the surrounding areas in the Mission Mountains Tribal Wilderness will close to recreational activities on July 15 and remain closed until Oct. 1. This area known as the Grizzly Bear Management Zone is closed annually in order to avoid human disturbance to grizzly bear activity.

Sunrise Fire, West Fork Fish Creek Fire reforestation project begins
Just a stone’s throw from Alberton in 2015, the West Fork Fish Creek Fire burned through 11,845 acres of local recreational wilderness, causing extensive damage to both the forests and infrastructure within the area. This year, local residents have watched as 26,310 acres burned in the Quartz Creek area in the Sunrise Fire.
