THE FRONT ROW with MARK NELKE: Kathy Clark fought the battle for women's athletics at Idaho

“I’m glad Idaho hasn’t forgotten who I am,” she said with a laugh. “I’m proud that I had a pretty strong role in the development of women’s athletics … I’m very glad I was there. It’s a great institution. Moscow is a wonderful community and the relationship between the community and institution is fantastic. And I hope it always stays that way. “It’s nice that young girls don’t think about that (Title IX) now, but they need to, because it hasn’t always been this way.”

A cup of joe and a classic car with the MLPD

MOSES LAKE — For Rob Roemer, the reasons for being out in the parking lot across from the Moses Lake Civic Center at 8 a.m. on a Saturday were self explanatory. “Who doesn’t like coffee and donuts?” he said. Roemer stood next to the open hood of his 1971 Plymouth Valiant Scamp, which he’s cleaned up and kept in fairly good condition. It’s one of several cars displayed by members of the Classic Car Club of Moses Lake (including a 1948 Kaiser) and the Diverse Society Car Club as part of a Moses Lake Police Department’s Cops, Cars and Coffee fundraiser for the BlueBridge Program, which allows individual police officers to help people in need of everything from a meal to a place to stay. It was a bring-your-coffee event, with The Favored Farmhouse — located just on the other side of the alley from the civic center parking lot — donating a portion of the proceeds from every cup of coffee sold Saturday morning to help the program, according to MLPD Chief Kevin Fuhr, with the MLPD also accepting donations to help with the program. “That's what today is all about,” Fuhr said.

Quincy looks to build off wins

QUINCY — Quincy head coach Russ Elliott, who is in his first year at the helm, said one of his goals this season was to change the mentality of the program. A year after going winless in 2021, the Quincy Jackrabbits evened their record at 2-2 with a 34-6 win over Brewster last Friday. “It’s (been going) good,” Elliott said. “Kids are working hard, coaches are working hard. The good part is we got some payoff – we won a couple games, which is unusual for us and a good feeling for the kids.”

Player is a credit to himself, team, community

I watched a varsity player, No. 21, standing by the JV players encouraging and mentoring them. For a very brief instant, I also saw him glance back to the bleachers. There in the stands was a very old gentleman, wearing a Eureka Lions hat, attempting to navigate the steps. He was really struggling as his cane kept slipping. I was just about to go down and help him. However, Cleo Henslee, No. 21, saw the man helped the man find a seat. His response to this need directly reflects upon his family, the school, the team and coaches, and the Bonners Ferry community.
