Deadline nears for 'Forestry Shortcourse' program

Many Idaho forest landowners desire a better understanding of how forests grow and how they can better manage their forest property to meet their goals. Furthermore, forest landowners are often required to demonstrate planned, active forest management to qualify for lower forestry property tax rates and cost-share assistance for management activities such as thinning.

I support Tom Kealey for election as our state treasurer. Tom’s experience makes him the best qualified for this job. The state treasurer manages and invests billions of idaho dollars, ensures the state’s credit rating remains high, and provides financial services to state and local agencies. Tom has the knowledge to carry out his duties as state treasurer the day he steps into office.

Competitive salaries necessary to recruit, keep best teachers

As a parent, I have seen first hand the high-quality education Lake Pend Oreille School District delivers. Just this year, the school district was recognized for increasing the number of students taking Advanced Placement tests, as well as the number of students receiving college credit based on their scores. I have seen teachers offer workshops during their summer vacation to prepare students. I have seen teachers come in during their Christmas break to open the computer lab so students could work on their drafting assignments. I have seen coaches put in much more than the expected amount of time to make sure their student-athletes maximize their potential and learn the rewards of hard work.

While I am well beyond the point of having school-age children, I still believe that it is my civic duty to support our public school system. My family was relatively poor and I credit a lot of my success to being able to attend a good public school system. It allowed me to provide my children with similar opportunities, which I am glad to say they took advantage of. It also gave other children of all income ranges similar opportunities to advance. In my opinion, public education at all levels is a vital part of what has made our country great.

A devastating merger agreement is under consideration by the Public Utilities Commission of Idaho. A current open case, No. AVU-E-17-09, begs public comment from anyone oppositional to the notion of carbon credits, cap and trade and/or Agenda 21, all of which are the socialist tenets of global governance.

We in Flathead County welcome thousands of tourists every summer as they vacation in or near Glacier National Park, contributing to our local economy while thrilling to natural beauty. Significant numbers of workers in the service trades: cashiers, cooks, food servers, housekeepers, janitors, and others, make that possible.

SCHOOLS: No taxes for religion

Dear Senator Nonini: As an Idaho taxpayer and a believer in “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” I am opposed to my tax monies being used to support any religious school. Your tuition tax credits bill will siphon $10 million a year from public funds in a scheme which smacks of money laundering.

TEETH: Fluoride evil - to cavities

"Fluoride Fight," on Sunday, June 5, correctly credited fluoride with dramatically reducing cavities and tooth decay. In the 1950s, before water fluoridation was common, most people over the age of 65 had lost their teeth. Now, after decades of widespread fluoridation, more seniors are keeping most or all of their teeth.

WATER: Caution on treatment upgrades

Legally, it might be hard to question Judge Luster’s decision to allow the city to go ahead with the water treatment plant expansion. Still, the decision leaves me with several questions. Why is not more being done in Idaho to eliminate phosphorous before it enters the wastewater system? This question is important because a 2012 EPA agreement with the state of Wisconsin eliminated the need for costly wastewater treatment plants. Instead, they banned certain detergents and designed a pollution credit trading system to achieve EPA’s approval. Can we get this deal?
