State wants schools to save energy

It’s no secret that Montana schools are doing amazing and innovative things. Students today have opportunities to earn college credit in high school, get hands on career training in college and gain valuable skills in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields in elementary and middle school. Through these efforts, students are achieving and succeeding in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation is hosting its annual Voices of the Wilderness celebration and fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 2 at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake at 6 p.m. This year, the keynote speakers will be United States Forest Service employees discussing winter travel and conducting snow surveys in the Wilderness during the winter months.

Stacey Michael Calbick, 37

Stacey Michael Calbick, 37, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at his residence in Creston. He was born on Sept. 30, 1972, in Kalispell. Stacey graduated from Flathead High School and worked for Ron s Alignment for many years. He had a son, Michael Calbick, in 1991. Stacey also worked for Wagoner s Sand and Gravel, driving loading equipment before following his dad into trucking with Schlegel and Sons Contractors. Stacey married Christina Moen in 2000 in Kalispell, and together had a son, Riley. The couple later divorced. Among Stacey s passions was hunting, fishing and camping. He loved spending time with his boys and could even occasionally be found on the golf course. Stacey was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two sons, Michael Calbick of Bothell, Wash., and Riley Calbick of Kalispell; three half brothers, Ron, Brett and Justin Calbick; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services for Stacey will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Chaplain Bob Thornton officiating. There has been a memorial fund set up at the Whitefish Credit Union for Don and Stacey Calbick, in care of Karen and Bonner Armstrong, 234 E. Montana St., Kalispell, MT 59901.  Flathead Valley Community College has received approval from the Montana Department of Labor and Industry to offer a non-credit First-class Boiler Engineer licensing preparation course beginning April 9.

Kalispell police

Kalispell police arrested five people on drug charges Thursday at a motel. Police received information about a drug deal in progress, leading to four people who were charged with possession of dangerous drugs and one man who was charged with possession with intent to sell. The drug is suspected to be methamphetamine, said officer Jim Wardensky. One of the suspects also was arrested on a warrant for probation violation; another was out of jail on bond for a felony theft charge.

I applaud Susan Repa’s letter on “Common sense rules for money handling in nonprofits.” As a former executive director of a nonprofit, former owner of a bookkeeping business, and current nonprofit board member, I echo her rules for making simple accounting changes to help prevent embezzlement.
