This time next year the dust will be settling on ballot initiatives challenging all three prongs of the "Students Come First" education plan adopted by the 2011 Idaho Legislature. The new laws restrict the bargaining powers of local teachers unions and eliminate indefinite continuing contracts for all new teachers. They also call for advances in classroom technology and merit pay increases for teachers.

Gloria Maxine (Harshbarger) Caudill, 71

Gloria Maxine (Harshbarger) Caudill, 71, passed away Jan. 12, 2010, at Brendan House in Kalispell, due to pancreatic cancer. She was born May 15, 1938, in Antelope, and graduated from Flathead County High School in 1956. In 1958, she married Tom Caudill at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kalispell. They were married for 52 years. Gloria managed the School Employees Credit Union in Kalispell for 18 years. More recently, she had worked for Flathead County elections. She was most currently a homemaker. She was active in several ministries in her church, including Lutherans for Life, Ladies Aide and the Thimble Club. Gloria loved quilting, gardening and birdwatching; and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mattie Harshbarger; five brothers, Joe, Shephard, James, Robert and Vincent; and five sisters, Madlyn, Jane, Libby, Lone and Bessie. Gloria is survived by her husband, Tom Caudill, of Kalispell; children, Wade Caudill of Kalispell, Rod Caudill of Post Falls, Idaho, and Kim McVicker of Kalispell; seven grandchildren, Katie Foreman, Ben, Cody, Leighan and Ryan Caudill, and Andy and Jeremy McVicker; two great-grandchildren, Dunham and Daegan McVicker; siblings, Minnie Richardson, Evelyn Miller, Ann Carter, Carol Torpen, Bonnie Mudgett and Galen Harshbarger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Urn burial will be at a later date. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorials are suggested to Lutherans for Life and Trinity Lutheran Church.
