Going deep into the debt industry
Why I skipped the bank and took out a loan from my 'peers'
Smile! That teeth-whitening offer might be a scam
An employee of a local grocery store called me with a story I found hard to believe. It seems that a woman wearing scrubs, the clothing that staffs of doctors and dentists sometimes wear, was wandering around the food store, selling teeth whitening services. The reported offer was to sell an individual a coupon for $60 that would entitle the buyer to a discount of hundreds of dollars on their teeth whitening. The person peddling these coupons, by wearing medical attire, was clearly attempting to give the impression that they themselves were employed in the medical arts. I don’t know that they weren’t, but I have my doubts.
Beware HVAC companies that run hot and cold
A consumer called me with a real doozy. It seems a local company advertises some of the lowest prices in the area. So far so good, but when the local consumer decided to contract with them to replace her aging furnace and A/C unit, things didn’t go so smoothly. Her version of the story — and it is just one side — is this:
Uber and out? Scary reminder
It turns out that some time ago, someone hacked the ride service Uber and stole approximately 57 million credit card numbers, along with authenticating information for those cards. In my opinion, most people in this area don’t have much to worry about, in that Uber isn’t a major player in this market. On the other hand, don’t be careless. Continue “best practices” and check your credit card statements carefully for odd-looking charges. If you find an odd charge, say from a nick backshop in Nairobi, call the card company and “put it in contest.”
Stubborn is a good ass-et for this mule
A concerned grandmother called me this week asking if I’d heard of a company called Air Mule. Her adult grandchildren are about to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trip to Europe and beyond.
Here's why credit trumps debit almost every time
A very savvy, sharp-eyed reader of this column called me and told me that according to Dave Ramsey, a well known personal finance guru, the consumer who uses a debit card has the same protection as a consumer who uses a credit card to make a purchase. We talked for a few minuets and then after getting off the phone, did our own research.
Beware the doorknockers offering sweet TV deals
Dish or Direct? Many consumers in our area use satellite TV instead of cable TV. A new and very dangerous scam has come to our area. Itinerant doorknockers are making the rounds offering about $50 off your monthly Dish or Direct TV bill. They arrive in a neighborhood in convoy, usually two vehicles, one with a magnetic sign on the side (easily removed or changed).
Q&A: What did the Fed do Monday and who will it help?
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve took several aggressive steps Monday to support an economy ravaged by the effects of the coronavirus. The amount of money involved is huge and the Fed's ambitions are vast: It wants to make loans available to companies and governments so they can pay bills and potentially avoid layoffs. It also committed to buy as much government debt and mortgage-backed securities it deems necessary to ensure those markets will function.
Let us look at lettuce
The Cd’A Press as well as other print and electronic media outlets have done a good job alerting us to the E. coli hazard connected with eating romaine lettuce. Unfortunately, not everyone always listens carefully to the news or reads all the information in print media.
