Rural emergency hospitals are starting to gain a small foothold in the United States. They provide 24/7 emergency care and receive more than $3 million in federal money a year. But the catch is there are zero inpatient beds at the facilities. Nearly 20 hospitals converted to the new federal designation in 2023. Experts say that it will help keep hospital doors open, but won't solve all of the problems. People will still need to travel longer distances for treatments for illnesses that require inpatient stays, like pneumonia or COVID-19. There's also little margin of error to making the change.
