Experts: Virus numbers could be erratic after Thanksgiving

When an appellation falls

We are very fortunate as wine consumers here in North Idaho as we continue to taste and have access to wines from new and different appellations, or growing areas. In the last 5 plus years since we have opened our shop we have seen wines from Portugal, Lebanon and Greece become available. It is only a matter of time before the wines of Slovenia and other former "East Block" countries enter the market. At the same time the entries from New Zealand and South America have dramatically increased and while we have tasted some from all of these areas that are great and others that have disappointed they have lent depth and richness to our overall market to go along with our own local wine producing regions and the more traditional old world countries.

The wines of spring

We have always noticed seasonality to our own palates and as the weather warms which will happen sometime soon, we crave lighter bodied wines in both white and red. Dry Roses also become more popular, and of course the spring holidays like Easter and the accompanying brunch and dinner celebrations have wine pairings all their own. Here are some recommendations to not only enjoy as the weather breaks but also go well with your holiday feast.

Vacation confirmation and indications

We traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina last week, a chance to stay with and see friends and family who have relocated to the area. Like most trips, though, we also took the chance to check out wine shops and restaurant wine lists to see not only confirmation of the trends we see in our home market of North Idaho, but indications of what might happen next.

'Tots' drive off to slow start

Each year, the Sandpoint Lions team up with local businesses and the community through its Toys for Tots program to ensure everyone has a merry Christmas. Funds raised during the annual campaign go to purchase new toys for area children — or gift cards for older youth — who live in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Every Christmas, the Lions help almost 1,000 area children, from Sandpoint to Clark Fork and all points in between.
