Stresses can include traveling, preparing for a large gathering, shopping, decorating and cooking. Busy schedules can also lead to lack of physical activity. Holiday stresses are especially challenging for someone with diabetes.

Restraint and Balance: What it really means

In reviewing and describing wines for both our column here in The Press and for customers in the shop, we frequently talk about restraint and balance in winemaking. Much of this is based on what our palates prefer as wine consumers and less about a quality judgment. We taste wines all the time from a wide array of winemakers working with an even bigger array of varietals from appellations all over the world that are well made but for a variety of reasons just don't appeal to us.

Sage advice

As many of you know from joining us this past weekend, we just held some events with owner, winemaker, local boy, brother and brother-in-law John Lancaster of Skylark Wine Company. It has been nearly two years since I had a chance to spend this kind of time with John, and it is always illuminating. In addition to being one of our favorite winemakers, John is also the wine director and sommelier at Boulevard restaurant in San Francisco. This provides him tremendous perspective, and when it is coupled with one of the best palates I know of and wine knowledge that borders on the encyclopedic, his advice on all things wine is invaluable!

Mid-summer recommendations

Summer arrived in full-force this past week and with it another surge in wine consumers pursuing crisp whites and lighter bodied reds. Our dining has moved outside, as has our cooking, opting for the grill over the oven. Gatherings have increased in size and frequency as friends and family look to enjoy the weather together. It is, after all, the best time of year in North Idaho. So here are some of what we have been drinking that we really enjoy. Full disclosure: some are repeats, but frankly the ones that are have just been tasting really good.
