A dog's life

“Lassie” was the first television show I ever watched. Sunday night, six o’clock, on Grandma’s small black-and-white television. I wanted a dog, just like Lassie. But dogs were expensive. Five dollars at the pet shop in Portland. I worked to earn the money. Two dollars came from walking to kindergarten by myself. (Not as bad as it sounds: Only one mile each way, rarely through the snow, and uphill in only one direction.)

Pope announces World Youth Day to return to Asia in 2027, urges young people 'not to be afraid'

Pope Francis has announced World Youth Day is returning to Asia for the first time in three decades. He made the announcement Sunday at the end of his five-day trip to Portugal. He's presiding over a massive open-air Mass for an estimated 1.5 million people who camped out overnight on a vast field. The sun rose over them so they could attend the grand finale of the World Youth Day festival. Francis' trip has been largely improvised: There have been speeches ditched in favor of off-the-cuff conversations with young people and a formal prayer for peace at the Fatima shrine, long associated with Soviet aggression.

The fat truth

The truth about fats has been muddled in poor research, special interests, and now more than half a century later, an embarrassing conclusion to the human experiment we have been. In the late 1950s Ancel Keys theorized, based on some questionable research, that saturated fats may have a leading role in heart disease. Then Nathan Pritikin pushed that into including obesity. Actually, what Pritikin advocated was the elimination of processed foods, particularly sugar, and white flour, and to replace them with wholesome, fresh, raw foods, to include a good exercise program, and to lower fat intake. The low fat aspects were jumped on because an entire food industry could see the potential increase in market sales. This was new and exciting, and as Americans were becoming alarmed at the increase in cardiovascular disease and waistlines, they too embraced the theory.
