Swayne wins reinstatement lawsuit

North Idaho College President Nick Swayne won permanent reinstatement Friday.

Grant County has issued a Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance (MDNS) under the State Environmental Policy Act Rules (WAC Chapter 197-11) for the following project: A phased Planned Unit Development and Subdivision of four parcels totaling 171.58 acres into thirty four (34) residential lots and open space tracts located in the Rural Residential - 1 zoning District of Grant County. The PUD has three proposed phases. Phase 1 will have 9 residential lots, Phase 2 has 12 residential lots and Phase 3 will have 13 residential lots, along with several open space tracts. The project access is located on the west side of Silica Road approximately 1/4 of a mile south of the intersection of Sunland Estates Road and Silica Road, then west approx 1/4 mile, then south 1/2 mile to the site. The project is located in a portion of the North 1/2 of Section 18, Township 18 North, Range 23 East, WM, Grant County, WA (Parcel #15-0433-000, 15-0433-001, 15-0433-002, 15-0433-003).

Flathead Forest Supervisor Chip Weber has provided a thoughtful response to the controversial foot races that are being proposed for Big Mountain and the Foys-to-Blacktail trail (June 30). I’m not particularly opposed to either proposal, since the former would occur on a heavily used recreation site, and the latter would occur in low quality habitat that presumably is only rarely visited by grizzly bears. However, where does one draw the line in light of our burgeoning population and changing recreational tastes? For example, Supervisor Weber undoubtedly is aware that runners and bikers have also been casting hungry eyes on wilderness lands, including heavy political lobbying by organized mountain bike groups.
