At last, a non-partisan issue. It concerns fees for use of national public lands (lands the maintenance for which we already pay through income taxes.) These lands are our heritage as American citizens and the legacy we pass on to our children and future generations.

Are El Nino rains starting to arrive in California?

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, moisture from the tropical Pacific dumped over 2.4 inches of rain across the Los Angeles area. It was the second wettest September day in history in downtown Los Angeles. Parts of San Bernardino County to the north of Los Angeles picked up over five inches of rain, a new record. There were also some showers in extreme Northern California in mid September and in early October. Residents cheered the rainfall, but there is still a long way to go before ending the massive drought.

A woman ended up under a car after someone apparently hit the gas following a disturbance in the parking lot next to a Montana 35 bar around 4 p.m. Monday.

- The TDS retail store has opened at 2834 N. Ramsey Road, Suite 109, next door to Winco. A grand opening will be held Oct. 3 through Oct. 5 at the store. TDS is building a 700-mile fiber-optic network that will allow internet with speeds up to 1 gigabit in Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, Hayden Lake, Post Falls and Rathdrum.

(ARA) - There is new promise for the nation's malls. A fixture throughout America's cities and towns for decades, the conventional mall is in a state of decline. It is possible to rethink yesterday's malls with a creative vision that will return them to their prominent place in communities and realize lasting social, cultural and economic value. For example, just this summer, the former Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, Calif., was transformed into a new center that, while operated like a mall, feels and functions like a part of the city.

As I'm writing this, I'm remembering the nasty surprise Mother Nature gave us just a year ago. Starting on Oct. 10, we received three nights of the coldest early freezes ever in Coeur d'Alene. The worst was on Columbus Day, the 12th, when the early morning temperature went down to 15 degrees. The high for that day only reached 40. Another record.
